Learning Across the ELC
Banksia Room
This term, our inquiry will explore Living Things, inspired by the children’s growing curiosity about the natural world around them. With the warmer weather, the children have noticed various insects and garden creatures in the Banksia Garden and shared many questions and observations. We invited them to discuss what they already know and gathered insights into their interests to shape our learning experiences in the weeks ahead. By focusing on the insects and garden creatures they often encounter in daily play, we have created learning provocations and meaningful experiences that encourage exploration and questioning.
As part of our inquiry into living things, our Banksia friends recently welcomed silkworms and leaf insects into the classroom. Having these garden creatures in the classroom has created authentic opportunities for the children to engage in learning through observational drawing, brainstorming ideas, and watching videos of insects and garden creatures. This approach allows them to deepen their understanding by exploring the life cycles and unique features of these creatures. Through this inquiry, we aim to foster curiosity, develop observation skills, and build a sense of wonder about the environment.
