As we reach the middle point of Term 4, it is so exciting to reflect and see the progress the Prep students have made. The Prep students are concluding a busy first half of the term consolidating their knowledge of Changing Environments. They have made a diorama of an environment of their choosing, with a living organism and have been working to include the elements that organism would need to survive. Students used a variety of materials to bring their ideas to life. The creativity on Level 5 has been infectious and we are so proud of what the students have created.
In Year 1, we were fortunate to have an in-visit from the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company. The actors were incredibly charismatic, and their performance had us ALL laughing throughout the show. The students actively participated in retelling numerous fairy tales that we have been studying in our Fairy Tale English Unit. They thoroughly enjoyed the stories and the humorous antics!
This week, our Year 2 students have been writing opinion pieces. They have learnt that the goal of this genre of writing is to make the reader agree with their opinion. They were inspired by the book The Day the Crayons Quit. To demonstrate their skills in opinion writing, our students wrote a letter to their favourite colour crayon to persuade them not to quit. Hopefully, their skills in persuasion will do the trick!
In our recently completed English unit 'Light and Sound', the Year 3 students took on the exciting challenge of becoming newspaper reporters! Each student wrote their own newspaper article about one of two historic inventions that changed the world – Thomas Edison's lightbulb or Alexander Graham Bell's telephone. After researching these famous inventors and crafting their articles, the students proudly presented their work in front of their teacher and peers. We were incredibly impressed with their confidence, creativity, and attention to detail in each presentation. It was wonderful to see these budding journalists share their hard work and bring history to life!
It has been a very busy fortnight in Year 4! Last Friday the students competed in Basketball Gala Day at MSAC. The teachers were so impressed at the sportsmanship which the students showed while representing SMPS.
In Science, we have continued to learn about heat. Do you know which material out of metal, wood or plastic is the best conductor of heat? We did an experiment on it and found that metal is. Have you ever wondered why a cooking pot is made of metal but the handle is usually plastic? Ask your child - they will be able to tell you!
Year 5 had a camp-tastic time at YMCA Lady Northcote! Everyone was buzzing with excitement as they set off for three days of adventure, fun, and a chance to spend a couple of nights with their friends. The students threw themselves into all kinds of activities—taking a thrilling ride on the giant swing, zipping around on bikes, paddling canoes, and even making their own pizzas in the kitchen. Throughout camp, they showed our school value of character by making sure everyone felt included, cheering each other on, and being brave when they felt a little scared or nervous. They also showed the power of community by looking out for each other every step of the way. It was a wonderful time for everyone to bond, build resilience, and make memories to last a lifetime!
The Year 6 children had an incredible time at YMCA Lady Northcote, making memories that will stay with us forever! This was our last camp together, and after six amazing years as classmates, spending these days laughing until our bellies hurt and taking on adventures was the best way to celebrate. From the giant swing to canoeing, biking, and making our own pizzas, we embraced every moment, showing character by cheering each other on and trying new things together. Our time at camp brought us closer than ever, uniting us as friends for life and reminding us just how special our bond has become. Check out the pictures below to see how we got on!
