Years 7-9 Links & IE visit the MCG

Earlier this term, Years 7-9 Links and IE students visited the Australian Sports Museum and Melbourne Cricket Ground. They were excited to complete a guided tour of the MCG, where they learnt about its rich cultural and historical significance. Through interactive displays in the Australian Sports Museum, students gained insights into the evolution of sport, the science behind athletic performance and the cultural impact of sport on society. They also met an Olympian and were inspired by her story of overcoming obstacles to reach her goals. Finally, they tested their sporting skills in a variety of Game On interactive exhibits.

Here are some excerpts from the students’ reflections on the excursion.

The most amazing thing during the tour was to view the Melbourne Cricket Ground from high up in the stands. Gloria Gaw (9.9)

A highlight was discovering the history of the MCG. I learned there was one red seat in the middle of other blue seats which was where a cricket ball landed after getting hit by a cricket bat. This was the world record distance the ball had ever travelled. Caleb Kwok (7.4)

A highlight was meeting an artistic swimmer who represented Australia in the 2008 Olympic Artistic Swimming team. I learned that Olympians train hard and are brave, outstanding people who never give up and persevere towards their dream goal to help their country’s team. Esma Badihi (7.4)

One of the highlights of the excursion was meeting a synchronised swimmer. I learned they had to train for 10 hours a day. Some of their hair was even burned off because of the effects of the chlorine. For the competition, they had two extra nose pegs: one on their finger and one on their bathers. Some things that stood out to me was that they spent three weeks training and then one week with their families all year round and that they did not get to eat any fast food. After this experience, I was left wondering if the nose peg that they must wear would leave a mark on their nose due to them wearing it for such a long time. Faith Deakin (7.1)

A highlight was going to see the sports museum and trying all the fun things like riding a bike or shooting the goals. Aurora Zivanovic (8.5)

The best part of the whole trip was learning about the history of the MCG. We went down into the players’ rooms and even got to walk on to the ground. We also looked in the Long Room where the members get to sit. Jackson Haines (7.1)

A thrilling moment was when I touched Nick Daicos’s locker and touched some grass on the ground.  I learned that the MCG was really small in early days, but now it is huge. Jayden Hume (7.2)
