Melbourne Courts Visit
Melbourne Courts Visit – Year 11 legal excursion.
During our excursion to Melbourne, we had first visited the beautiful, old Supreme court, built during the gold rush era in Victoria around 1852. We were greeted by a former Seymour College student named Christina Varcoe, who kindly assisted us as we made our way through the court. The Supreme Courts architecture presented as well-maintained with well-crafted patterns embedded all over the walls and ceilings. The layout of the courtrooms further displayed the powerful symbolism that the Supreme Court stands for, with the judge’s area specifically, standing as a tall and imposing figure to anyone who sees it. The trial itself was a case referred to as a ‘slavery trial’, which involved a family of eight members. the father of the family was being accused of isolating of his wife and six children on their farm and would threaten to hurt his family that if they didn’t listen to him. This trial was said to be just the beginning of many trials that are said to continue, with the one we saw only discussing matters that the accused would not be charged for. Once the trial had come to end, we met with the judge who was running the trial, Justice John Champion, who had provided us with more context of what the trial was about and told us his personal story on how he came to be a judge, mentioning how he started out as a prosecutor. After we left the Supreme Court and had a lunch break, we made our way to the County Court to learn and act out as a mock jury. We preformed the mock jury selection in a criminal courtroom in the County Court and shared the mock trial with another school. Most of the students participated, with a few being picked to play the various roles like, the judge, defence, prosecution and the accused. Overall, the excursion was a great experience, and we all enjoyed participating in it.
