Hunted - By Caleb Miller - 358 words - age 16
The night was dark and cold, the air thick with fog. Sarah had left the light on in her bedroom as she made her way downstairs. As she entered the kitchen, a chill ran down her spine. It was not just the cold air and the dim light, but the overwhelming sense of something sinister and malevolent that hung heavy in the air. She knew she was not alone. As she moved about the kitchen, she couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She felt an icy hand on her shoulders and heard the sound of a whisper in her ear. Something was very wrong. She needed to get out.
But as she went to open the kitchen door, a loud, high pitched scream pierced the air. It was not a scream of terror or pain, but a scream of pure, raw hatred. Sarah knew in that moment that she was in mortal danger. She was not alone in the house, and whatever was there with her was not human.
She ran for the front door, her heart racing with fear, her mind screaming at her to get out, to flee, to survive. She threw open the door and tumbled out into the darkness. But as she stumbled out into the night, she heard the sound of something behind her, chasing her. She ran as fast as she could, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the sound of footsteps behind her, getting closer, closer…
Suddenly, she stumbled and fell, her body aching with pain. She tried to get up, but her legs simply would not move. She knew it was over.
The sound of footsteps came closer and closer, until finally, she heard the sound of a scream, this time not of terror, but of victory. She knew it was the last sound she would ever hear. The last thing she saw before the darkness swallowed her whole was a twisted, inhuman figure, a shadow in the night. For a moment, she had caught a glimpse of the true nature of the evil that had haunted her that night.
