Living with Strength and Kindliness
This week, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Matthew, a moment that invites us to reflect on the profound simplicity and power of Jesus’ words, "follow me".
In the gospel reading, we see Matthew, a tax collector, sitting at his table when Jesus calls him. Without hesitation, Matthew rises and follows, leaving behind the life he knew for something deeper and more meaningful.
The invitation to "follow me" is not just for Matthew, but for each of us. It is a call to step away from our comfort zones, to trust in something greater than ourselves, and to embrace the journey of faith. Jesus doesn’t ask us to have everything figured out or to be perfect before we follow. Instead, he calls us just as we are, with our strengths, weaknesses, and uncertainties.
As we reflect on this gospel and enter into the term break we might ask ourselves: How are we being called to live with Strength and Kindliness in our interactions with each other?
One of the great privileges of my role is the opportunity to be present for moments that reveal the heart of our community. Recently, I had the honour of listening to the speeches of our prospective student leaders. The students spoke beautifully, sharing their vision for the future of our College with a passion that reflects both their dedication and hope for what lies ahead.
A key point that each student was asked to reflect on was why they wanted to lead. Their responses were a powerful reminder of the gifts this community brings into their lives—gifts they now wish to pass on to others. They spoke of the connections they have formed, the opportunities for learning and growth that have shaped them, the friendships they have built, and the fun they have had along the way. Many expressed gratitude for the sense of safety and belonging they have found here, and their desire to lead stems from wanting to create that same experience for others.
As I listened, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pride and hope for the future of our College. These young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow—they are already leading today, by example, with their compassion, and vision. I am excited to see how they will continue to shape our community in the years to come.
