Learning to Learn 2024
Hello families and welcome to a new year of teaching and learning in 2024!
Last week our students settled into their new classrooms and routines by participating in Learning to Learn. Learning to Learn allows students to understand new classroom rituals and expectations, not only in regard to academics, but their personal, social and emotional learning that will be supported and guided by teachers and Inclusion Team staff throughout the year. Please take the time to visit your child’s classroom at our Family Picnic so that they can show you the fruits of their Learning to Learn endeavours.
Home Reading is up and running this week and so I thought I would take this opportunity to outline the ‘Teesdale Way.’
The Junior School (Foundation, Year 1 and 2)
Junior School students will come home this week with their blue satchels. Inside these you will find ‘best fit’ books for your child to read with you and to you. We ask that parents support this routine at home and encourage your child to log their book in their student diary. This is a wonderful study habit to establish, promoting organisation, independence and of course, the lifelong skill reading! Our student diaries are also a useful tool to communicate with teachers who check diaries each day.
Students are also welcome to borrow books from our classroom libraries. As these books are not the decodable texts that support reading development, parents may want to read these aloud and discuss the story.
The Middle School (Years 3 & 4)
Middle School students are encouraged to continue their strong 'Home Reading' habits as they grow as readers and begin to enjoy more complex texts. Teachers will provide decodable texts as required and students are welcome to borrow from their classroom libraries and enjoy chapter books, information texts and reading digital texts on their iPads. Middle School students can independently log their own reading.
The Senior School (Years 4, 5 & 6)
Senior School students are encouraged to read and log a wide range of texts. They will access books from classroom libraries and their iPads. This year students may choose to get involved in a book club with students across the Senior School. Our book club books this term are -
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to myself or your child’s teacher.
Happy reading!

Book Club
Scholastic Book Club is a service offered to students, parents and teachers. Brochures advertising a variety of books and computer software are sent home with each student, approximately twice a term.
Purchase of the books is not compulsory and there is no obligation. If you do wish to purchase any goods simply log into the Book Club site www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP and follow the prompts. The School earns “Bonus Points” for each order which can be used to purchase new resources for the Library.
The latest catalogue will be coming home this week. Orders need to be placed by Friday 23rd February via LOOP.
