Religious Education

Students will explore the unit, ‘Discipleship’ Students will uncover the meaning of Christian discipleship and how they are called to live a Christian life. Students will study the Beatitudes as our way to live a Christian and moral life. Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to respect the dignity of all humanity. Students will investigate judgements and behaviours that prevent people from preserving the human dignity of all. Students will explore Scripture, Church Tradition, and the actions of Jesus to deepen their understanding of how to live and act justly.

Later in the term, students will also explore the unit  ‘The Liturgical Year’. This unit enables students to explore the traditions, beliefs, Scripture and events celebrated by the Catholic community throughout the Liturgical Year and especially during the time of Advent to Christmas, Lent to Holy Week and Easter to Pentecost

English

This term’s program, ‘The Frozen Continent’ focuses on building students’ skills, understandings, values and attitudes in English while exploring Antarctica’s uniqueness and critical importance for the global environment. This unit focuses on argument and authority and symbol, image and connotation. Students practise note-taking, synthesising and communicating information. They analyse text features that characterise an authoritative style and apply these when reading and viewing texts and in the composition of a variety of texts. Students explore the impact of writers and composers utilising symbol, image and connotation in texts and apply literary devices for clear purposes in their writing and composing of a range of informative, imaginative and persuasive texts about aspects of sustainability.

Students will continue to follow the ‘Soundwaves’ spelling program and will have the opportunity to revise their spelling skills using the online component of the program.

It will further develop students' understanding of the Earth, its position in the solar system and as a dynamic part of a complex, interrelated system.

Mandarin

Our students continue to enjoy participating in the Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions with educators in China.

Homework

This year your child will have a homework grid, providing them with a range of curriculum activities and inquiry learning tasks. This will include students completing a mentals workbook, spelling and reading/comprehension activities, religious education tasks and opportunities for inquiry learning throughout the term.

All students will be issued with a Homework Book and a Maths Plus Mentals Homework book.

MATHS PLUS HOMEWORK BOOK:  A weekly task will be set and we ask that this be returned each week. Maths Plus follows a graded and spiralling approach, allowing for the revision of concepts throughout the year. It will provide students with opportunities to sequentially develop, practise and master their skills and knowledge.

Parents, please be reminded that family time and extracurricular activities are a very important part of your child’s development. Take note that reading is the most important aspect of learning at home with your child. Children in Year 6 are recommended to be spending 40 minutes per day completing their homework tasks. Please communicate with your child's classroom teacher via their diary if for any reason they are unable to complete their weekly tasks.

We look forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher via a note or by appointment via the office.
