Junior class news

Prep: Mrs Towill      Year 1/2: Mrs Laity

Welcome to 2024!!

It has been a smooth start to the 2024 school year for our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. The first three weeks have really zoomed by. We have loved hearing all the stories about the fantastic Summer break and family experiences that students have had.

During the early part of the term in the Junior School, we focus strongly on forming healthy learning habits, relationship building and learning to work collaboratively in groups. Prep, Year 1 and 2 students have unpacked the school values of Equality, Kindness, Leadership and Knowledge, discussing what these mean at school and how we can display them in the classroom and in the playground.

The Prep focus for the start of the year is also based on building positive classroom learning experiences, getting to know each other, their peers and teachers and our school environment. Important procedures and routines are modelled and practiced along with setting classroom and school expectations. (As well as having lots of fun!)

Each morning we start with our 'Learning through Play' session followed by Literacy, Numeracy, Humanities and Wellbeing. Across the week students participate in Music, Art, PE and Auslan sessions. We also visit the library and have a Grade 5/6 Buddies session.

The academic focus in Year 1/2 in literacy is on narratives and describing characters. We have been reading "Fantastic Mr Fox" together. Students have loved the colourful language used to describe the farmers and the fox family! Stay tuned for some examples of student writing in the next edition.

The Year 1/2 numeracy focus is on understanding the place value system and the concept that digits have no value until they are assigned a 'place'. It can be a difficult concept for students to comprehend, but one that we will spend a lot of time on in this term.
