Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families & Friends.

It has been so busy in the Jericho community this week.  Our little visitors arrived on Monday, and we have been very busy watching the eggs hatch throughout the day and ensuring the chickens are comfortable, warm, fed and watered.  We have some names as the chicks come along, so far Brightbill, Chit Chat, Little Timmy, Shelly, Roz & Sam are named, with more ideas being researched as we speak.

Don't forget!

Next week on Friday is our Fathers Day Celebration where we have a dance to perform and games to play.  We look forward to welcoming you between 8.30 and 9.30am.

Please don't allow your students to bring Labubu dolls or their merchandise to school. Some of the younger students find the Labubu's quite upsetting.

A reminder that smart watches are not allowed at school.  Students that have mobile phones for safety reasons are asked to hand them in to the teacher at the beginning of the day and are returned at the end of the day as per our ICT policy.

Our Learning:

English:

This week we finished watching the movie of 'Wild Robot'.  It was very emotive, many students (and teachers) were teary as Roz was protected by her animal family, and then left her family to protect them in the future. If you would like to watch the movie, it is available on Netflix at the moment. Students continue to learn vocabulary associated with the book, such as hoisted and instincts and also to create advertisements.  Next week the students will complete a persuasive letter independently to see how much they have learnt about writing structures over the term, while finishing reading the actual book 'Wild Robot'.

Mathematics:

This week, the students have been calculating fractions using bar models (as shown last week in the newsletter). Next week, the students will learn about converting between fraction and decimal notation for tenths, halves and quarters.

Integrated Studies:

The chickens remain our main focus next week, the children are writing a journal documenting the lifecycle of a chicken and observations about their habits.  The students will begin getting ready for their upcoming excursion to Melbourne Zoo (12th September).

Religion:

As the students continue their 'Fuel for the Journey' unit, we have explored Passover and how it relates to the mass. After a break to our Rosary learning last week due to illness, these lessons, provided by the parish, have continued this week and finish up next week.

Social Emotional Learning:

The students continue to learn about Positive Gender relationships.  While the last week has introduced an age appropriate understanding of gender based violence, the students will become consent detectives next week. This means that we will be learning about personal space and body boundaries and what it can be like if other people do hurtful or bad things to our bodies. We are learning about these things so that we can better understand what is okay and what is not okay, how to stay safe by telling someone to stop, by getting to somewhere that is safer, by seeking help to stay safe, or by telling someone what happened.

Auslan:

Over the last week the students have been practising words related to thinking such as I know, I don't know, I remember, I wonder and I think.  While the students had explicit teaching to learn the signs, we have also used games to practise using the signs.  The photo's below show a memory game in various ways being played by students in small groups.  The students needed to match the cards while using thinking signs.

Next week, students will practise signs related to family.
