Year Three
Spotlight on Learning
Ephesus Community
Dear Families,
Positive emotions help people broaden their thinking and build physical, intellectual, and social well-being (Fredrickson, 2009). In the Ephesus Community, we are using positive primers at the start of lessons to create a welcoming and focused learning environment. These can include calling the roll in a funny voice, sharing a short video, or showing close-up nature photos. Images of nature can reduce stress and spark curiosity—perfect for leading into learning.
For example, what about these everyday objects?
They all have something to do with water. Does that help?
Can your brain find some vocabulary to describe them?
Religious Education
This week, students are learning how the Holy Spirit gives us strength and how we can see the Spirit’s gifts in our daily lives. They are exploring the meaning of Confirmation, naming the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and reflecting on how these gifts guide their choices. Students have also discussed how prayer helps them make good decisions and how acting with kindness shows God’s love in action. These lessons are helping students understand how faith supports them in making positive choices each day.
Integrated Learning
Week 6, students have been learning about how to show respect and include others in games and groups, and why inclusion is so important for everyone. They also explored the difference between safe and unsafe feelings, sharing examples of times they felt this way. Students practised how to respond by talking to a trusted person and supporting others to feel safe and included.
English
This term - week, students are learning to identify pronouns in sentences and understand how they replace nouns. They are also practising adding adverbials to their writing to give more detail about when, where, or how something happens. These skills are helping students write more varied and interesting sentences.
Students have been busy writing their own Information Reports on a topic of their choice. They are learning how to organise their ideas into clear sections, use factual language, and include interesting details. It has been wonderful to see the variety of topics chosen and the effort students are putting into their work.
Mathematics
Over the next two weeks, Year 3 students will be learning to tell the time to the nearest minute on both analog and digital clocks. They will practise showing o’clock, half past, and quarter past/to times, and learn how minutes and hours are connected. Students will also work on ordering numbers on a number line and finding halves using number lines to support their understanding of fractions. These skills will help them build confidence with time, number patterns, and problem-solving.
Social and Emotional Learning / RRRR
This week, we learned that gender-based violence is a type of harm that happens when someone is treated unfairly or hurt because of their gender, gender identity, or the way they express themselves. It can include physical actions, unkind words, or emotional hurt. We discussed how this doesn’t just affect the person targeted, but also impacts the people around them and the whole community.
AUSLAN
This week, students learnt how Auslan uses the body to show meaning. Signs about thinking, such as remember or know, are made near the head, while signs about feelings are shown near the head and heart. This helped students understand how Auslan uses the body to express both ideas and emotions.
