Year Two
Spotlight on Learning
Damascus Community
Dear Families,
Year 2 students had a wonderful week filled with fun and learning! They continued to explore the benefits of healthy eating and began to consider how diet, exercise, and sleep all play an important role in keeping our bodies and minds healthy. These ideas will be further explored during our upcoming Drama Toolbox Incursion. Students have also been practising a special song in preparation for our Father’s Day celebration, as a way to honour and recognise the special male figures in their lives. We will also be having a fundraiser to help create a special garden for Natasha.
Reminders:
For the upcoming Drama Toolbox Incursion, students are required to wear their sports uniform on the day. As part of the incursion activities, students will be removing their shoes and participating in socks only. Please read the social story attached below with your child.
We are putting together a special Year 2 Recipe Book to celebrate our wonderful community! We warmly invite all parents to contribute by sharing a simple or traditional family recipe to be included in the book. Recipes can beprinted and sent in with your child or emailed directly to the classroom teachers.
This week we are learning about...
Religious Education: This week, students learned about how God the Father created each of us and spent time reflecting on their personal relationship with God. They explored the teachings of Jesus through simple stories and parables, discussing how these messages can help them grow in faith.
Mathematics: This week, students continued developing their understanding of mathematical operations, with a focus on solving multiplication and division worded problems. They explored a variety of strategies to support their thinking and working out, including thebar model and the CUBES strategy.
English: This week, students explored information texts through reading the book Eating Healthy. They have been learning to write opinions about the importance of healthy eating and its many benefits for both the body and mind. Through their reading and discussions, students discovered the value of the five food groups and how eating a balanced diet helps them get the nutrients they need to learn, grow, and play.
AUSLAN: This week, students learned about using visual thinking to help them plan and organise stories. They were also introduced to the "closing sign", a visual cue to show that a story is coming to end, like closing the door or shutting a book.
Integrated Studies: This week, our students learned about the Healthy Eating Plate and had fun creating their own, using the five food groups. They also talked about the different messages they receive from school, home, and the community that help them stay safe and make healthy choices.
Social Emotional Learning: This week, students learned to identify harmful behaviours like hurting feelings, causing physical harm, or damaging belongings. They also learned about emotions people feel when they see or experience these actions, such as sadness, fear, or anger.
Next week are learning about...
Religious Education: Students will be learning about the different ways people pray.
Mathematics: Students will be learning about the features of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects.
English: Students will be exploring the text What do you call your Dad and create texts with a clear purpose, so children understand who they are writing for and why.
AUSLAN: Students will exploring signs related to thinking.
Integrated Studies: Students will attend an incursion to learn about the benefits of healthy eating.
Social Emotional Learning: Students will explore what it means to give consent, as well as how to give it or refuse it. They will also practise using respectful strategies
