Dear Families
There is never a quiet week in the Jerusalem community. This week our students have been busily preparing for Father's Day celebrations on the 5th of September. Hope to see lots of Dads and Father figures at school.
This week:
Literacy-During whole class Reading, we have read the book 'The Guardian of the Gums' a comic book that helps us understand the importance of looking after our teeth as we grow.
Literacy-During Phonics, we looked at the ci, cy and ce sounds where the i,e and y change the sound of the c to a soft c sound as in space.
Mathematics: This week for Mathematics, we continued to learn about number patterns. An activity you can do at home is as follows. You could change the number range and practise the same task at home.
Integrated: This week we learnt about looking after our teeth independently and what actions we can take to take care of oral hygiene. We have been observing a food sample from a very famous fast food seller and some fresh fruit. We then spoke about why the processed food has not deteriorated but the fresh fruit has started to break down. This experiment helped us to understand what preservatives do to food and our health. Encourage students to read food labels in your pantry or fridge, they should be able to identify the sugar content in packaged foods.
Religious Education: During Religion, we learnt about the gift of 'Patience' given to us by the Holy Spirit. We then tied it up with how fathers and father figures look after us with patience.
SEL: This week we learned how to identify when someone is not showing safety by showing violence. The term is specifically taught in an age appropriate way based on the Respectful Relationships School Resource.
AUSLAN: This week during AUSLAN we learned the following signs.
Literacy-Reading - Next week we will be reading Zog and The Flying Doctors.
Literacy-Phonics - We will focus on 'soft g', g makes an /j/ sound as long as it is followed by an e, i or y as in gentle, gigantic or gym.
Mathematics - We will continuing our work on number based patterns.
Integrated - We will focus on help seeking, tied up with the St.Johns First aid incursion.
Religious Education - We will be focus on Father's Day preparation
SEL - We will work on the opposite of violence is respect
AUSLAN - We will work on signs that relate to thinking such as remember, know and wonder are signed around your head
Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.
Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.
Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.
Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.
Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.
