Year Five
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Bethany Families,
As we approach the end of Week 6, we are now well past the midway point of the term. Over the past few weeks, students have continued learning about puberty and the changes that come with growing up. The Year 5s have shown wonderful maturity and respect during our discussions, asking thoughtful questions and engaging meaningfully with the topics we’ve explored.
Parents can support this learning by having open, honest conversations at home. These discussions help to build your child’s understanding and confidence as they navigate this stage of development.
Religious Education Focus:
Next week, we will begin exploring symbols and their meanings in our Spiritual Journey and discovering how these symbols can guide, inspire, and support us as part of our “Fuel for the Journey” theme.
English Focus:
Students have been enjoying reading 'Tom Appleby, Convict Boy' by Jackie French and will continue to read this during Week 7. Students will continue to analyse the vocabulary in the text as well as adding to their writing of an Information Report. The focus for next week will be on creating the conclusion for their information report.
Mathematics Focus:
Next week, students will be learning to measure angles using formal units of measurement. They will be using protractors to measure angles, and record measurements of an angle using degrees.
Integrated Studies Focus:
For our health unit we will continue learning about puberty and specifically how to manage the changes our bodies go through during puberty. Students will learn why hygiene is important during puberty and identify some products and strategies to manage body changes.
SEL Focus:
In Week 7, students will explore positive gender role models and discuss the qualities, actions, and values that make these individuals positive influences. Through class discussions and activities, students will reflect on how these role models challenge stereotypes, demonstrate respect, and inspire others.
Auslan Learning Focus:
Next week we will learn the signs from Unit 7C. Students are learning that in every sign language around the world some of the signs resemble (look like) the thing that they refer to. These signs are called iconic. In this unit we learn signs for farm animals and continue to retrieve and build on our use of depicting signs and colours.
As students bodies are developing, we ask families to ensure students have enough nutritious food packed in their lunchboxes to sustain their energy levels and attention throughout the day.
