What's Happening In Grade 2?

Grade 2 has had a busy and exciting term 2, filled with meaningful learning across all subject areas. Here's what we've been up to:

Literacy

This term in Literacy, students have been focusing on recounts—a type of writing that retells past events in the order they happened. They have learned the structure of a recount, which includes, orientation: who, what, when, why and where, series of events: the main happenings, in sequence and a conclusion: how it ended or how they felt.

Students are also learning about key language features, including past tense verbs, time connectives (like first, next, then, finally), and personal pronouns. They’ve been writing recounts about their weekends, school activities, and special events. We’ve been focusing on planning writing, including key details, and editing to improve clarity, grammar, and punctuation.  A fun time was held by all during our Book Week parade and incursion.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students are continuing to build their skills in addition and subtraction using a variety of mental strategies, such as doubles, near doubles, part-part-whole, bridging tens, partitioning, associative property (rearranging and regrouping numbers)

We are also learning to solve word problems using the bar model and writing matching number sentences. Students are encouraged to explain their thinking and relate each number to the real-life situations.

Students have also been exploring 3D objects—identifying features such as faces, edges, and vertices, and using mathematical language. We've also introduced location language (e.g. above, next to, between, under) and begun identifying different types of lines in our environment.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term is ‘Our Local Community’. Students are learning to: define places and identify natural (rivers, mountains, ocean) and constructed (roads, parks, buildings) features and understand why places are important to people. Explore how people form connections and attachments to places and observe how places change over time and ways to care for them.

Through class discussions, mapping activities, and personal reflections, students are gaining a deeper understanding of their own community. They’ve been sharing their own special places and learning why these locations matter to their families.

We’re also looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Sovereign Hill on September 3rd, where we’ll observe how a community has changed over time.

We’re proud of the effort our Grade 2 students are putting into their learning and the thoughtful connections they are making with the world around them!
