Careers Expo: Exploring Pathways and Possibilities

On Wednesday 30 July, the Br Leo Scollen Stadium was buzzing with energy as students and families attended our annual Futures Expo—an important event for students in Years 8–11 as they consider subject choices and future career directions.

The evening offered a valuable opportunity for students to connect with representatives from universities, TAFEs, and industry, alongside our own staff, to learn about a wide range of pathways and programs. From exploring VCE and VM options to discovering careers in trades, health, technology, education and beyond, the night was rich with conversations and insights to help guide informed decisions.

A sincere thank you to Mr Paul Colvin (Pathways Leader), Ms Kamila Bielinski, Acting (Deputy Principal – Learning & Teaching), Ms Pier Bourne & Ms Maria Nasoulias, our Learning Area Leaders, Ms Phillips, and all staff involved in making this such an engaging and informative evening for our students and families.

Year 10 Reflection Day: Shaping Who We Are

Recently, our Year 10 students had a day away from their usual routines to take part in a meaningful day of reflection focused on the theme "Values, Beliefs and Decision Making."

This special day offered students the chance to pause, connect more deeply with one another, and consider how their personal values and choices shape who they are becoming—echoing the wisdom of our founder, Nano Nagle, who taught that our integrity is formed through both our words and our actions.

Through group discussions, quiet reflection, and guided activities, students were challenged to consider how they can be a force for good in their communities and in the world. The retreat served as a timely reminder that service and compassion lie at the heart of a well-lived life.

We extend our sincere thanks to Fr Luke and his team for leading the day with such care and insight, and to staff members Miss Fraser, Miss Nguyen, Mr Farrelly, Mr Joshua, Mr Sirianni, and Miss Jepkosgei for their presence and support throughout the experience.

Thank you also to our Maintenance Team for managing the setup and pack-down, and to the staff who generously covered classes to ensure the day ran smoothly.

Celebrating Academic Excellence Assembly

On Thursday, we proudly celebrated the outstanding achievements of our students at the College Community Assembly for Academic Excellence and Stella Awards. It was wonderful to have so many parents join us in recognising the effort, perseverance, and commitment shown by our high achievers throughout Semester 1.

A special highlight was hearing from former student Imalda Devaparanam, Class of 2003, who shared her inspiring journey from St John’s to becoming a leader in medical education and radiation therapy at Monash University. Her message reminded us all of the importance of finding your passion, staying the course—even through setbacks—and trusting that effort and persistence will lead to opportunities.

Congratulations to all students recognised at the assembly. Your success reflects not only your hard work, but also the ongoing support of your families and teachers. My thanks to the planning and organising teams led by Ms Phillips , Ms Bielinski and the Acting Deputy Principals for Learning & Teaching – Ms Bourne and Ms Nasioulas.

Celebrating Food Studies and Vocational Major Weeks

Over two action-packed weeks, students at St John’s embraced the creativity, collaboration, and career pathways offered through Food Studies and Vocational Major (VM) learning.

Food Studies Week (28 July – 2 August) was a sensory delight! From baking chocolate cookies in the 5-Loaves Patisserie to mastering triple chocolate mug cakes and crepes in the Graduates' Kitchen, students explored their passion for food through hands-on lunchtime workshops. Thursday’s VET Information Session over a BYO lunch gave students the chance to learn more about future pathways in hospitality and food industries.

The following week, VM Week (4 – 8 August) showcased the breadth of the Vocational Major curriculum. Highlights included “Bradley’s Famous Pasta” and “Soup’d Up” lunches in the Graduates’ Restaurant, mindfulness activities, healthy lifestyle challenges on the courts, and a sensory cooking challenge. Students wrapped up the week with creative and collaborative games, including musical chairs, drawing, and building challenges.

A big thank you to the staff led by Mr Vanderlaan and Ms Dias and students who made both weeks such a success—these activities were a wonderful reminder of how learning at St John’s extends well beyond the classroom.
