From the Classroom

News from Grade 1/2

What a wonderful and busy term it has been so far in Grade 1/2! The students have been engaged in a wide variety of activities and it has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and hard work each day.

Book Week has certainly been a highlight. The parade was a huge success, with some amazing costumes on display across the whole school. Students enjoyed showing off their outfits and celebrating together. Throughout the week, we also completed special Book Week tasks, with ‘Spiro’ proving to be a definite favourite among the class.

Reading has been a big focus. Students are showing great enthusiasm during their independent reading time and are becoming increasingly confident in talking about what they read. Our daily big book sessions are always popular, with a strong focus on comprehension strategies. Alongside this, students are strengthening their phonics knowledge through hands-on activities, which support both reading and spelling skills. For enjoyment, we are also reading ‘The Enchanted Wood’. Grade 1/2 are very engaged with the characters and love following their amazing adventures.

In writing, students have been developing their skills by describing characters and exploring how they change throughout a story. They are making connections between reading and writing, which has led to some great ideas and creativity in their Reader’s Notebooks. We have also been enjoying exploring narratives together.

Our maths has kept us very busy as well! We began the term exploring all things shape, focusing on both 2D and 3D shapes. The class enjoyed discovering new mathematical language such as quadrilateral, parallelogram and vertices. More recently, we have been learning about multiplication and division and have had fun making and sharing arrays to show our thinking. Students are beginning to see how skip counting can help them solve problems. Blitz Master has also been a big focus, with students working hard to beat their times, progress through the levels and strengthen their skills along the way.

Our theme this term is learning all about Space, which has been an exciting and popular topic. The students have explored the phases of the moon and have learnt some fascinating facts about the solar system.

On top of all this learning, students have been earning tokens for their positive behaviour. Some have enjoyed spending their tokens each week, while others are saving up for bigger rewards.

As you can see, Grade 1/2 has been full of learning, creativity and fun! We are excited for more experiences and achievements in the weeks ahead. Be sure to check out our lovely photos below!
