Year 2/3

This term, Year 2 students have been exploring the world of Chemical Science in our inquiry unit. We have been investigating what happens when different materials are combined, and how new substances can be created through mixing. As part of our learning, we enjoyed a hands-on science incursion where we had the chance to make fake snow! Students were amazed to see how two simple ingredients could react to form something fluffy and fun to touch.
We also experimented with mixing materials to create our own playdough, noticing how the texture and properties changed as we combined the ingredients. A highlight of our unit was the special visit from Professor McKay, who wowed us with spectacular science experiments. She amazed us with bubbling volcanoes, colourful magic milk patterns, and even balloons that inflated by themselves without anyone blowing them up! Through these activities, students have developed their understanding of how mixing and reacting materials can cause exciting and surprising changes. Most importantly, we have discovered that science is not only about learning—it can be lots of fun too!
