INCLUSIVE EDUCATION CENTRE

LAKE AINSWORTH EXCURSION

In week four, students from the Inclusive Education Centre attended an excursion to the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre. Each student participated in a variety of organised activities, including a damper cookout, rock climbing, tag archery, marine life investigations, beach walks, and some very brave swimming in the cold ocean.

It was wonderful to see students actively engaging, working together, and enjoying these real-world, hands-on learning experiences. The excursion supported the development of confidence, social skills, and community connections, while also fostering a greater sense of belonging and independence. Students had opportunities for sensory exploration, personal growth, and practising skills in diverse environments.

A special mention goes to Lane McCarthy, who attended his very first excursion, and to Ben Miles and Ethan Webb, who showed great leadership in supporting Jordon Walker. Jack Davis was also a standout, encouraging Ashley Kirk-Edmonstone to reach new heights on the climbing wall.

Learning outcomes for excursions like this focus on curriculum achievement, community connection, independence, and social development. These outcomes are achieved by linking the experience to curriculum goals, applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure accessibility, providing personalised adjustments, and working in partnership with students, families, and support teams. Through these approaches, students gain meaningful experiences that foster confidence, inclusion, and a strong sense of belonging.

The camp was good. I liked hanging out with my friends out of school for a couple of days. I was the best at damper making, put the boys to shame. I killed first man at that wall. Richie

The beach was my favourite part of the excursion, watching a sunrise, walking along the sand and looking for dolphins. Caitlyn

On the excursion my favourite part was the rock climbing. Blair

My favourite part of the excursion was archery, aiming at people and getting nervous dodging the arrows. Ethan W

I enjoyed sleeping in the cabin with my friends. I tried new foods. I played archery tag with my friends. Lane

The best part of the excursion was the beach. I loved the marine study when I went in the water. Ashley
