Respectful Relationships

PREP

This term, our Prep students will be exploring Topic 5: Stress Management and Topic 6: Help-Seeking from the Respectful Relationships program. Through stories, discussions, and engaging activities, students will learn to recognise what stress feels like in their bodies and identify different emotions they might experience, and how to deal with these emotions. Students will also practise knowing when and how to ask for help and identify the trusted adults in their lives, both at school and at home and who they can turn to when they feel worried or unsure. These lessons aim to give our Preps the confidence to look after their emotional wellbeing and support each other in positive, safe ways.

YEARS 1+2

Topic 7- Gender Norms and Stereotypes

This term, in Years 1 & 2 we will be exploring the different things we enjoy doing and comparing our interests with those of our classmates. We will learn that having a variety of skills and strengths helps us learn, build resilience, and have fun. We will discuss how understanding our own and others’ preferences can help us play and work better together. We will talk about how rules make games fair and how being unfair can make others feel hurt or upset. We will practise being fair to everyone, no matter their gender, and learn what we can say if someone tells us that we can’t do something because of our gender. We will also learn what labels are and why it’s not helpful to label people.

YEARS 3+4

Topic 7- Gender Norms and Stereotypes

This term, Year 3 and 4 students will explore what makes them similar to and different from others, and learn that anyone regardless of gender can have different interests and strengths. We will examine how gender roles are shown in traditional fairy tales and compare them to modern stories and films. We will discover that it is okay to like different things and choose roles that suit them, no matter their gender. We will also reflect on how peers might put pressure on each other and practise ways to respectfully challenge unfair expectations. Throughout the term, the students will learn about the difference between rights and responsibilities, identify their own, and recognise the people in their lives who help protect their rights.

YEARS 5+6

Topic 7- Gender Norms and Stereotypes

This term, Year 5 and 6 students will learn correct terminology and will identify strategies that children and adults can use to create a friendly and inclusive school environment. Students will explore how gender norms are passed down through social and cultural practices, such as clothing, hobbies, and sports. We will also examine how these norms are transmitted through intergenerational cultural traditions and rituals, like weddings and celebrations. We will describe ways gender norms are perpetuated by the media, including how social media influences beliefs about how to behave. Students will identify strategies peers may use to negatively reinforce gender norms through a form of peer pressure called ‘gender policing, ’ and they will learn ways to challenge and respond to gender policing effectively.
