Learning in Year 1

Bug Incursion
On Thursday the 7th August, the Year Ones were visited by some very special minibeasts. We had a very hands-on incursion where we explored a special bug tent filled with butterflies, stick insects and all sorts of creepy crawlies. We also got to use magnifying glasses to take an even closer look at these amazing creatures. It was a fantastic way to get us excited about our integrated topic. We are so excited to dive deeper into their world, with a focus on how snails, bees, ladybugs, spiders and ants help humans to survive!
Here are some of our reflections from the incursion:
My favourite part was when the butterfly landed on my nose because it tickled. Yvette (1C)
I liked looking at the bugs in the cool telescope. It was fun! Harry (1C)
I felt excited when I touched the minibeast because it stared at me and did not move! Dorothy (1C)
I learnt that male butterfly’s have two dots at the back of the wings, one on each side. Makenzie (1B)
Insects have exoskeletons which means they have bones on the outside. Louis (1B)
We did four activities which included finding crickets and looking at them through a magnifying glass which was fun and cool! Alex (1B)
Bee Keeper Visit
We were also lucky enough to be visited by a real beekeeper from City Bee. Jackson's dad brought in a hive, some photos and a real frame with over 1000 bees busily working. It was such a wonderful experience to see these creatures up close, with some of us lucky enough to spot the Queen Bee in action. Thank you Jack from for taking the time to show us how you look after and support the bees in Ringwood.
Book Week
During Book Week, we had a class passport to take us on an adventure into some of the CBCA shortlisted books. We were taken to many wonderful places like the jungle, a spider web, bush and even a forest. These stories took us on journeys about grief, perseverance and appreciating our own differences.
We also had the opportunity to read in lots of special places. The change in scenery was such a treat and we hope to continue visiting these spots when reading as the weather gets warmer.
Lastly, we finished the week by dressing up and sharing all the books and characters we love. I wonder if you can work out our favourite characters? And also did you spot some giraffes that couldn't dance?
