ICCES AFL Carnival – Thursday 31st July

On Thursday 31st July, Girton Grammar proudly hosted the annual ICCES AFL Carnival, with matches played across two venues: the girls competing at Epsom and the boys at Catholic College (CMC). Girton was represented by four enthusiastic teams:

  • Year 7 & 8 Boys
  • Year 7–9 Girls
  • Year 9 & 10 Boys
  • Year 11 & 12 Boys

Each team displayed grit, sportsmanship, and a strong Girton spirit across the day’s matches.

Year 7 & 8 Boys – Coached by Mr Williams

The Year 7 & 8 boys opened their campaign with a dominant 34–8 victory over Highview. In their second match, they faced a tough challenge against the eventual champions, Ballarat Grammar, narrowly losing in a heartbreaker, 15–12.

Finishing second in their pool, they advanced to the semi-final against Goulburn Valley Grammar School (GVGS). Despite controlling most of the play and having six scoring opportunities, all resulted in behinds. A case of missed chances cost them the win, falling 13–6. A valiant effort earned the boys a respectable third place finish.

Year 7–9 Girls – Coached by Ms White and Mrs Holmes

The girls brought fantastic energy and team spirit to the competition, playing three games in a four-team round robin.

They kicked off with an emphatic 28–0 win over Braemar, showcasing excellent teamwork and skill. Despite battling tough windy conditions, they went down in their next two games to Bacchus Marsh (30–0) and eventual winners GVGS (24–0).

With one strong win and two hard-fought losses, the girls finished third overall – a fantastic result and a great platform to build upon for future carnivals.

Year 9 & 10 Boys – Coached by Mr McCarthy

The Year 9 & 10 boys opened in style with a convincing 50–7 win over Highview. Their second match saw them take on Ballarat Grammar – the tournament’s strongest side – where they were defeated 34–8.

Progressing to the semi-finals, the boys faced GVGS, who got off to a flying start, leaving Girton scoreless in the first half. A stronger second half performance wasn’t quite enough, with the final score 44–13. Another third place finish, but plenty of positives to take away.

Year 11 & 12 Boys – Coached by Mr Langan and Mr Madden

In a competitive five-team format, the senior boys played four matches, with the top team crowned based on points and percentage.

  • Game 1: A strong start, defeating Highview 27–7.
  • Game 2: A thrilling battle with Bacchus Marsh Grammar saw the boys fighting hard in the second half against the wind. Despite dominating possession, they just fell short by two points.
  • Game 3: A high-scoring affair against GVGS ended 32–20 in their favour.
  • Game 4: The boys bounced back brilliantly, finishing the day with a solid 25–9 win over Braemar.

With two wins and two narrow losses, the team finished with eight points and claimed second place overall – a significant improvement and a testament to their determination and teamwork.

A huge thank you to all staff and student helpers who supported the event. Your time, energy, and commitment made the day a great success, both on and off the field.
