Student Activities

Art

This term, our students have been diving into the world of artistic expression. They've experimented with still life drawing using both pencil and oil pastels, showcasing their unique interpretations and creativity.

We also began exploring the Impressionist movement, looking at how art reflects and influences society and culture. Taking inspiration from the great Impressionist artists, students had the opportunity to step outside and create their own impressionist-style paintings.

It's been inspiring to see their skills and confidence grow as they experiment with new techniques and ideas."

Baking

This term in our Baking Elective, students have been learning new skills while making a range of delicious treats.

We started with classic chocolate chip cookies, focusing on accurate measuring and mixing techniques. Next came rich, fudgy brownies and cinnamon white chocolate cake, followed by buttery shortbread, which we drizzled in chocolate.

Students were able to take their baked goods home to share with family, and some of the treats were also enjoyed by staff during afternoon tea. It’s been a fun and rewarding way to build kitchen confidence, with more baking still to come.

Students Serve Our Community: A Month of Sausage Sizzles

Groups of students representing their respective classes have spent the Fridays of August demonstrating incredible community spirit through a series of fundraising sausage sizzles at Bunnings Warehouse in Mernda. Under the supervision of their teachers and education staff, our students worked tirelessly to raise money to support the fight against homelessness in our local community among other linked charities.

The regular event was a fantastic display of teamwork and dedication. Students greeted customers with enthusiasm, cooked and served hundreds of sausages, and managed the funds raised. This hands-on experience offered our young people a valuable lesson in social responsibility and community action. By participating in every aspect of the fundraiser, from setup to clean-up, they gained a deeper understanding of the practical efforts required to support those in need.

We are proud to announce that the funds raised will be donated to a local charity that provides essential support, including meals, shelter, and services, to individuals and families experiencing homelessness right here in our area. This initiative truly embodies the compassion and empathy that we strive to instil in our students at Plenty River College.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the students and staff who volunteered their time, to the Bunnings Warehouse team for their generous support, and to everyone in our community who came out to purchase a sausage sizzle. Your contribution has made a tangible difference and will directly help some of our most vulnerable neighbours.

Gym

Every Monday afternoon, students who have chosen to participate in the activity of going to the Gym, go to Mill Park leisure Centre to spend an hour exercising and training. The students use the gym to build strength and agility with some students doing their own specialised routines.

The gym offers the students a space where they can work on their health in a positive way through weight training and cardio, which in turn helps boost their mood and prevent cognitive overload.

The gym has recently brought in a recovery station which the students love and utilise every Monday afternoon.
