Iuk (Eel season)

A new Wurundjeri season has started. Two of the school Sustainability leaders, Rishika and Hannah, were excited to share some information about Iuk (Eel season) at our whole school assembly last week. Iuk is the Wurundjeri word for eel. The Kulin Nation, which the Wurundjeri people are a part of, have 7 seasons in total.

When the hot winds stop blowing and the temperatures cool, the manna gums flower, and the days and nights become equal in length, it is Iuk Season. The Yarra River becomes muddier and the eels migrate downstream towards the sea. The eel is an important part of Wurundjeri society as a sacred, spiritual protector, and an important source of food.  See below a graphic which shows the Wurundjeri seasons.
