Grade 5

Reading

As students engage with the novel War Horse, they have begun immersing themselves in the compelling story of Joey the horse and his experiences during World War I, working on deepening their comprehension skills. Through aided class discussions, readings, and reflections, students over the term will explore the themes, characters, and historical context of the novel. This allows them to draw on prior knowledge—whether from previous lessons about history or personal experiences, making connections to the text along the way. As they move through the narrative, students also expand their vocabulary by encountering new words in context and learning how to interpret their meanings. This dual focus on comprehension and vocabulary development helps them become more confident, thoughtful readers while enhancing their ability to analyze and engage with complex texts.

Writing

When introducing narrative structure to students late this week after focusing on adding description to our sentences, the focus was on helping them understand how stories are organized, from the introduction of characters and setting to the unfolding of the plot and its resolution in later weeks. The class started with character and setting development, encouraging students to consider how authors used descriptions and details to bring characters to life and establish the world of the story, linking this with the novel study of War Horse. By examining these key components, students were gaining a deeper appreciation of how stories are constructed and developed their understanding about how to apply these ideas to their own storytelling.

Maths

As students settle into their new math routines in their new classes, they began by completing a number pre-assessment to gauge their current understanding and identify areas for improvement moving forward. This initial activity helps both students and teachers assess strengths and gaps in knowledge, providing a clear starting point for the learning ahead. From there, the class has shifted its focus towards consolidating/recalling addition, subtraction, and multiplication. These core concepts serve as building blocks for more complex mathematical ideas, and as students engage with them, they work on improving both speed and accuracy.
