NAPLAN

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy

Information for Parents and Carers

  • Every year in March, all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across Australia take the NAPLAN tests.
  • NAPLAN assesses students' skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Some of the questions are read to students, while others are listened to through headphones.
  • The tests are adaptive, meaning they will adjust in difficulty based on how students are performing.

Students complete four different tests. The names of the tests are:

  • Students in Year 3 will complete the writing test using pencil and paper, while they will answer the other test questions on the computer.
  • Students in Year 5, 7, and 9 will answer all of their test questions on the computer.
  • Teachers will assist students in preparing for the NAPLAN tests.
  • Schools will receive their students' results and will provide parents and carers with a report showing their child's individual results.
  • Parents and carers can discuss these results with the teacher.
  • NAPLAN provides insight into how students are performing across Australia. People working in the Australian Government, state and territory education authorities, and schools use NAPLAN results to evaluate which schools are performing well and which may need additional support.
