Learning and Teaching

What’s been happening in Year 3/4 at St John’s?

The students in 3/4B worked together to create a class prayer. They incorporated the Jubilee theme of hope and also the school expectations; Be Respectful, Be Safe and Be Responsible.

This term in English, the Year 3/4 students have been reading ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl. They have been exploring interesting, rich vocabulary, different types of sentences and writing their own narratives. They will also begin to plan and write persuasive texts using prompts from ‘Matilda’ e.g. 'Old school punishments for students should not be used anymore' or 'Reading books is more educational than watching television.'

In Maths, the students in Year 3/4 have focused on counting and place value. They have been reading, writing and representing numbers in different ways. Numbers can be represented using digits, words, concrete materials and expanded notation.

The students have also been learning about addition and subtraction. They have been exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction by using fact families.

At the Parent Curriculum Information Night last week, the 3/4 teachers asked the parents to write down their hopes for their children for 2025. The parents wrote responses that included being happy, resilient and trying their best. Feel free to come and add some more hopes to our display!
