LITERACY

Year 3 - 4

In term 3, our students will be building their literacy skills by exploring Narratives, Novel Study and Persuasion in texts.  Narratives are stories that recount a series of events, real or imaginary. They can be fictional or non-fictional and serve various purposes such as entertaining, informing, or conveying a moral or message.  Our novel study readings will delve into the deeper meanings, themes, characters, and literary devices employed by the author.  Persuasion in texts will investigate authors' attempts to convince others or the reader of a particular viewpoint.

Year 5 - 6

Our students will be investigating Persuasive Techniques and generating Text Responses to class novels.  Persuasive Techniques including repetition, emotion and presenting facts allows authors to present arguments in a compelling and convincing manner. These techniques are not only important in persuasive writing but also in everyday communication where influencing others' opinions and decisions is crucial.  Our text responses will not only build students understanding the plot;  but it will uncovering layers of meaning, build appreciation of the author's craft, and engaging students' critical understandings within the text.

MATHS

Year 3 - 4

During Term 3, students will work on Number Processes (Multiplication and Division) and build an understanding of how to solve problems using these processes. They will also explore Shape (including angles and symmetry) as well as Location and Transformation and complete challenging tasks that allow them to think mathematically and use problem solving strategies .

Year 5 - 6

HASS - Civics and Citizenship

Year 3 - 4

Rules and Laws

Students will explain how decisions can be made democratically and the role of local government. They will recognise the importance of rules and distinguish between rules and laws.

All students will be taking part in a Bike Education program for two weeks. Bikes and helmets will be provided for this program for students who do not have their own bikes. We are also conducting Catching-on Early, an age appropriate health unit.

This term in Year 3/4 we are learning about community, government, rules, laws and voting. We voted in our class to pick what activity we would do. We have learnt about the different levels of government and what each level is in charge of. We are making a mini city in our classrooms using 3D shapes to make houses and businesses. We will use this to help us learn about mapping later in the term. We will learn more about rules and laws when we do Bike Ed and when we make a board game using scratch and the makey makeys.

Year 5 - 6

Government and Democracy

Students will learn about what makes Australia’s democracy special and why voting is important. They will talk about what different parts of the government do and how they help run the country. Students will also learn about the different jobs people have in the legal system and how parliaments make laws.

Students will find out how people can work together in groups to reach common goals. They will learn about being an Australian citizen and how to be a good citizen of the world. Year 5/6 extend their understanding of health through the age appropriate units within Catching-on Early. More communications relating to the Catching-on Program will be sent home before the unit begins.

In Humanities this term, we have been exploring the concepts of Government and Democracy. There are three primary levels of government: local, state, and federal.

Local Government: Responsible for managing city or town services, including road maintenance, waste collection, and local law enforcement.

State Government: Oversees the state, handling state highways, public education, and state law enforcement.

Federal Government: Operates on a national level, addressing issues such as national defense, international relations, and federal laws.

Each level of government has distinct roles and responsibilities, working together to ensure the smooth functioning of society. By Heldana
