Year 7 - 9 Community
August 2024
This term during Literacy students will be engaging in literacy circles and a whole class novel to focus on the themes within the novel as well as character analysis. Students will also revisit the TEEL essay structure to create a formal written response based on their character analysis work when reading the class novel.
The subject area for HASS in term 3 is geography, with a specific focus on geographical knowledge (water). The main driving question will be “How does the availability and safety of water affect people?”. Across the term we will aim to cover student interests along with the required curriculum topics, these include ‘how does Australia’s climate affect water? Does everyone in the world have enough water? What is virtual water? Water Pollution and many others. This learning will culminate in students completing individual or group ERPs (Education Research Projects) on an area of interest.
In Mathematics throughout term 3, Maths Pathway will continue to be the main platform that students use to support their learning. The primary focus will be on developing students' understanding of patterns and algebra and statistics and probability. Throughout the term students will undertake rich tasks (open ended/problem solving tasks) that require them to apply algebraic knowledge.
Humanities at Peacock
This term in Year 7-8 at Peacock campus we have been learning about different things to do with water such as aquifers, groundwater and the water cycle . We have been learning about how water is stored underground for tens of thousands of years and how most of the water we use is underground. When learning about our water topic we have all come together in a lecture type situation in our middle area. All classes have worked very collaboratively to get all work done. By Mason W
Collaborative Learning at Peacock
This term we have been focusing on collaborative working in class. We have been able to succeed doing this in English and Humanities by not only doing collaborative work in our classrooms but also across our whole community. In Humanities, we have been discussing what information will be on our assessments, as well as what tasks we have to complete to be able to succeed in our block of learning for this term. In English we have been working collaboratively to decipher the themes within our class novel ‘Holes’. We have been working in groups of three or four people to be able to find proof about each theme and supporting our ideas with evidence. The reason we do this in groups is so that we are able to compare our ideas with other people and challenge our thinking and make us think about why we think that.

Term 3 is an exciting term for the Year 9s. In week 1 we were able to celebrate our School Value Award Winners as well as handing out badges to our Year 9 Leaders. This Term our Year 9s will be completing the Morrisby Careers Insight program where they will be given a profile of their interests and skills to help them develop a plan on their further studies. We also enter subject selection for Year 10 which is their last chance to try different programs before moving into Year 11 and 12.
Term 2 saw us complete the onsite portion of the Geelong Tertiary Futures Program which allowed our Year 9s to try different courses that The Gordon has to offer at both the City and East Geelong Campuses.
