Year 10 - 12 Community
August 2024
We have 11 amazing Student Leaders at Year 10. All students across year 10 were given the chance to self-nominate to be a student leader. The students had to fill in a form and answer questions about themselves.
So far, our student leaders have been volunteering at Breakfast Club. Organising and coming up with ideas for events to run at recess and lunch like sports competitions and quizzes. They have come up with the idea to run a “Teacher of the Month” award and are working on implementing this in the coming weeks. They have also been advocating for their peers on things they would like to see happening in our Year 10 community.
Our Year 10 Student Leaders are:
Ali Baba Ashoor
Fatimah Alsowadi
Freshta Haidari
Hunter Palmer
Jahnaye Buntine
Joshua Lander
Mehdi Mohammad Aref
Mohammad Husseini
Rezai Rehman
Yasmin Yaqoobi

Student of the Month
Each month a student from Year 10 receives the Student of the Month Award. This is based on how the student has met our school values of Kindness, Persistence, Collaboration, and Growth. The student is presented with a certificate and canteen voucher for their efforts.
Who will be the SOM for July!?
Skyline Scholarships
A group of students were given the opportunity to write an application for the Skyline Scholarship Program. We were lucky enough to have 13 students progress to stage 2, which is testing. These students will compete testing on Thursday 1st of August. Then, they will find out if they make it through to stage 3 where they will undertake an interview and present a creative piece to the panel.
Please join us in wishing the students luck for the remainder of the process!
Goldsworthy Premier Visit
A vibrant group of year 10 leaders were chosen to welcome Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen and Member for Lara Ella George to our campus. As year 12 classes ramp up, it was pertinent that our college captains remain focused on their classes and study. Luckily, we have a host of passionate and confident middle years leaders who took it upon themselves to prepare speeches and create a student led tour around our school.
Highlights were welcoming Jacinta and Ella into classrooms, the gym and liaising with key staff such as Fiona, our 2023 school captain who is currently working in our SEED program.
This group of young people led by Farzana and Medhi were so proud to show off our campus and did so with kindness. We are so proud of each of them!

Homework Club
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 3:30 until 4:30 the VCE community runs, homework club. With rotating staff, there is always someone to help out with your studies, allowing students to complete an extra hour of work or revision before going home from school.
Student of the Month - June & July
In the VCE space a focus has been placed on our school values of persistence and growth. Our student of the month goes to two students who have shown persistence consistently in all of their classes, bringing a positive attitude with them wherever they go. Someone who has consistently demonstrated great academic and personal growth this year.
Congratulations to Pascaline Bunguke & Faith Faraon!
Upcoming casual clothes day
On Friday September 13, a casual clothes day has been organised by Mikaela Apps. A gold coin donation will go towards the Royal Children's Hospital.
Celebrating Success
In week two, the VCE community held an assembly to celebrate student achievement in relation to our school values. It was great seeing the students cheering each other on and being recognised for their positive contribution at Northern Bay College.
Week four, we were lucky enough to have multiple students in VCE awarded with their Western Chances Scholar certificates. Congratulations to Jonathan Tanner, Ernis Zivalj, Ethan Donaldson, Masoumeh Ebrahimi, Aleena Eftikhari, Faith Daraon, Roqya Husseini, Soe Mya Than Ler Wah, Marie Maarouf, Kisile Ntumba & Sher K’prui Say.
We have hit the ground running for term 3 in the VM and VPC Community. With more than 80% of students out on structured workplace learning on a Friday or completing a school based apprenticeship or traineeship, it is great to see the skills learnt at school being transferred to the workplace and vice versa.
Many community projects are in the works; from our vegetable garden, compost bin, second hand clothing store, bike maintenance and repairs, tree planting and water way clean ups to the can recycling scheme. It is great to see our future generations thinking about more sustainable practices.
Fundraising
Students have worked hard fundraising through numerous events including running a Bunnings BBQ to raise money for our end of year employability skills camp. Big shout out to those who came to help out, including Aiden Chittleborough, Dakota Bath, August Po, Hsar Kler Paw, Sher Nay, Kaleisha Steel Polgar, Joyce Tapp and the teaching staff, Damian McMaster, Adrianna Lacovantuono, Magda Sikora Wallis and Bronte Altus.
VM Podcast
We are excited to see the development of a VM podcast with the first few episodes looking at our health and wellbeing. We can’t wait to see where this might lead.
Awards
Highlights of students exhibiting their skills outside of school include Thomas Vanderpole winning bronze in the Aus TAFE Culinary Competition. Daniel O’Donnell, Kaan Ardanos and Yousef Raheemo who came second in the Western District School Sport Table Tennis Competition.
Sustainability Showcase
The Showcase was held on June 13 at Goldsworthy Campus. It involved Year 12 VM and VPC Students as part of their Unit 3 Literacy and Personal Development Skills subjects. The showcase is an annual event and students will also be developing a Social Justice Issues Expo in September to celebrate their work for Unit 4.
Students were able to raise awareness for their issues, through information, quizzes and competitions, as well as organising tree planting and waterways clean up excursions. Students were involved in planting of over 200 plants and grasses on Goldsworthy Campus. One group were able to describe and show the in school Container Deposit Scheme to students. They have collected over 1500 cans and bottles raising over $150!
Students are also part of opening of a second hand clothing store on Goldsworthy Campus, which will hopefully develop into a VM Store.
