Middle School

Grades 3 and 4

Olympic Fever has hit the Middle School

On 24 July we were lucky enough to have Natalie Harvey come in and share all about her Olympics experience with us. Here are some notes our students took following the session with Natalie:

Natalie Harvey is an Olympics runner.

She has gone to two Olympic games and missed out to go to some others. She missed by 4 seconds.

At one of the Olympics her roommate was Kate and they decorated their room.

Natalie trained in the mountains because the higher you are the less oxygen you get.

She started to go to the Olympics when she was 21 years old.

I learnt that the torch in different countries is made differently.

She got McDonalds for free with a special card.

Natalie showed us the mascots for the Sydney Olympics were a kookaburra, platypus and an echidna.

She ate a very healthy diet and she was a long distance runner.

Natalie Harvey competed in a 5000m race and went to two Olympics and did not go to the third by 4 seconds.

Natalie got 2 participation awards, 1 giant trophy, 1 small trophy and 1 bronze medal and a red velvet box with a gold badge in it.

Natalie trains in the mountains because there is less oxygen.

All of the competitors have a keycard that can get free McDonalds and can bring a friend or family member.

Natalie showed us mascots that represent countries. The Australian mascots were a kookaburra, a platypus and an echidna, representing sky, water and soil and their names were Syd, Olly and Millie.

This morning Natalie Harvey came to Andersons Creek Primary school to talk to us about her career being a two time Olympian.

She told us that she ran 5km and 10km. She told us how she did lots of different races and one of them, which was a national cross country, she and her team won a bronze medal.

When she went to her first olympics in Atlanta she was only 21 yrs old! She told us how when she was in the olymipcs, she travelled a lot and her and her team would normally sit on the side of the road waiting for people to come and go.

Overall I think she was very determined and I think from what she said today I thought it was very inspiring!

Scarlett R Grade 4

On the 24 of June Natalie Harvey came to ACPS to talk about her Olympic story.

Natalie was an Olympian who ran 5000 m/10 km track.

She competed at Atlanta when she was only 21. She was doing 120 km per week. In training she also competed in the olympics in sydney. She has continued to run but chose to no longer compete.

She knows that you don't need a medal to be the best in the world, you just need people who believe in you.

Natalie kept running but not in the olympics, she had kids and when they grew up they started to run too. And they enjoy running as a family.
