Grade 1 and 2
Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3! hope everyone had a restful break and that you were able to get out and about to enjoy the holidays. We are excited to be back at school for another full term of learning and fun and what a start back it has been. This term is already shaping up to be a busy one with the the Grade 1 and 2 students taking part in a variety of activities. We have many exciting learning experiences planned and we are looking forward to another wonderful term.
We know it is going to be an amazing term when this rainbow was sparkling at lunchtime in the first week. We were mesmerised.
English/Inquiry
The Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning about the Olympic Games as part of our inquiry unit. The students have already embraced the rich cultural experience the Olympic Games has to offer, continuing the great work begun in their Inquiry Learning. Students have been creating Olympic artworks, researching and learning about the different sports in the Olympics, the athletes and countries that will participate. Students have enjoyed learning about the history of the Olympics and have been developing understandings about biographies, writing about famous Olympic athletes. The students have also enjoyed creating their own biography ‘picture’ timelines about their life.
We can’t wait to cheer on our favourite athletes, and we will also be keeping a keen eye on the medal count throughout the course of the games.
HOST YOUR OWN HOME OLYMPICS!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to compete in the Olympic Games?
Create your own Olympic games in your living room. Start by thinking about what games you would like to include. Don’t worry if you don’t have sports equipment. You can scrunch up paper to make a ball, use a sweeping brush as a bat, use a towel as a net, use tins as floor markers, a sandpit for long jump, a frisbee for discus, teabag toss, Knock 'em down tin can stack, marble and spoon race… the list goes on. If you live near a park, or have a garden, you could also include some outdoor games to play in your local park or garden with your family and friends!
Numeracy
Money has been our topic over the past two weeks. The students LOVE money and have been busy investigating money in different ways. They refamiliarized themselves with ordering the Australian coins and notes in value, adding and subtracting money and even being able to spend money. We have looked into the range of animals and people on our cents and dollars and compared these to other countries.
Kaboom Percussion
This was a super fun incursion, thank you Mrs Bailey for organising this for us. The Grade 1 and 2 students absolutely loved it and we apologise to any parents who have experienced their child grabbing anything and everything at home to make music. We learnt that percussion instruments can be made from reused and recycled materials and we can also use body percussion to make music.
Looking forward to a great term ahead!
