Library News

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you had a wonderful break.

As we dive into the library's busiest time of the year, Term 3 is also the most exciting for book lovers everywhere. The term starts with our annual Scholastic Book Fair in week 2, followed by Book Week from August 19th to 23rd (Week 5). And yes, it’s the Dress Up Book Parade year, so get out your glue guns and patience; it’s costume time!

2024 Book Week Theme - Reading is Magic

This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Reading is Magic’, and in this week’s library lessons, we’ll brainstorm all the magical places, experiences and things you can find in books. This week, we’ll begin with reading books from the Early Childhood, Picture Book, and Younger Reader categories, so in week 5, classes can vote for their favourite book to see if we agree with the judges who announce the winners that week.

The CBCA Book of the Year Awards promote quality literature for young Australians, support a diverse range of Australian writers and illustrators of children’s books, and celebrate outstanding contributions to Australian children’s literature. Shortlisted books are celebrated across six categories.

Check out the incredible Jess Racklyeft poster for this year’s theme - what magical things can you see?

HTS Book Fair

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library from this Friday to the end of Week 2. Large display cases with a huge range of books are delivered to the school, and students can purchase books, posters and stationery items. This week a letter explaining the Book Fair and a catalogue will go home with your child. By purchasing from the fair, aside from taking home great stories for your family, the school earns a credit with Scholastic, which we use to purchase more books for our students to enjoy.  Like Book Club, there's no obligation for families to purchase.

I will be setting up the Book Fair on Thursday afternoon and taking photos that will be posted on the school’s Facebook page. Families may like to look at this ahead of time and are welcome to come before or after school next week with their child.

The Scholastic Book Fair opens on Friday, July 26th, and closes on Friday morning, August 2nd.

Book Fair opening times:

Before school (8.30am-8.50am)

Snack Breaks (Primary 1.30 pm-1.50 pm, Secondary 2-2.20 pm)

After school, 3.20 pm-4.00 pm (until Thursday, Week 2)

Students can view and buy during their weekly library lessons. Eftpos is also available.

Book Week Dress Up Parade - Tuesday, 20th August (Week 5)

Join us for our eagerly anticipated Book Week Dress-Up Parade on Tuesday, August 20th! Students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are invited to come dressed as their favourite book characters for a day of fun and to celebrate great stories. Students can dress up as individuals or groups, and families are invited to join in the fun, too. I’ve included some photos of the 2022 parade for some early inspiration. Can anyone guess who Mrs Rainger will be this year?

How’s Your Selfie Game?

This term, one of the exciting activities for Book Week is our #bookselfie wall in the library. Here, students and families are encouraged to snap photos with their favourite books, celebrating their love of reading. We look forward to filling the wall with these photos, which families can enjoy viewing on Dress Up Parade day. If you'd like to contribute a photo of your child with a book or your family reading together, please email it to invlibrary@arm.catholic.edu.au. Let's build our selfie wall and celebrate the joy of reading at HTS together!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the super readers who have completed the PRC already. With only a few weeks to go, if your child needs some extra books to finish, please let me know, and I can help them.

Meet Jacob!

Not only did Jacob in Year 7 give a speech about the Rubik’s Cube, but he’s also a master solver. From someone who has no clue how to solve the the original cube, I was in awe at how easily Jacob completed this masterpiece. Look at how many sides it has!

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser

PS - How many books about magic can you think of?
