Year 10 Religion and Ethics
As part of their Religion and Ethics studies, Year 10 students participated in an excursion to the Mareeba Mosque to deepen their understanding of Islam as a lived belief system.
During the visit, students were introduced to the features of the mosque and the significance of sacred space within the Islamic tradition. Students also had the opportunity to ask respectful questions and engage in discussion, gaining insight into how faith guides everyday life for Muslims.
Students demonstrated admirable respect and curiosity throughout the visit and reflected thoughtfully on similarities and differences between Islamic ethics and their own values. We sincerely thank Imam Daimin Murat for generously hosting us and providing a shared morning tea.

Year 11 Study of Religion
Earlier in the term, Year 11 Study of Religion students participated in an excursion to St Monica’s Cathedral and the Khacho Yulo Ling Buddhist Centre as part of their Nature and Purpose of Religion unit.
At St Monica’s Cathedral, students focused on the Creation windows, exploring how sacred art communicates religious belief and meaning. Through studying the imagery, colours, and symbolism of the windows, students examined how the Christian tradition expresses ideas about creation, God’s relationship with humanity, and humanity’s responsibility within the world. This provided a powerful example of how religion uses symbols and storytelling to address life’s big questions.

The visit to the Khacho Yulo Ling Buddhist Centre offered a contrasting perspective on the purpose of religion. Students learned about key Buddhist teachings such as mindfulness, compassion, and meditation, and discussed how religion can support inner peace, ethical behaviour, and human flourishing. The reflective environment reinforced how religious practices help adherents make sense of life and suffering.

Together, these experiences supported students’ understanding of how religions seek to provide meaning, direction, and purpose, and how beliefs are lived and expressed in diverse ways across traditions.
Wishing you all a joyful and blessed Easter.
