CHINESE NEW YEAR

MSS Celebrates Chinese New Year - Year of the Horse
Melton Specialist School was filled with colour, creativity, and excitement as our community came together to celebrate Chinese New Year.
The celebration provided students with a joyful opportunity to explore Chinese culture through art, music, food, and shared experiences across the school.
Chinese New Year, also name Chūnjié, is one of the most important traditional festivals in Chinese culture. It marks the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar. It is a time when families and communities gather to celebrate, share meals, decorate with red lanterns and banners, and exchange wishes for happiness, good fortune, and prosperity in the year ahead.
Throughout the celebration period, classrooms across the school took part in a range of engaging activities inspired by Chinese New Year traditions. Students created festive crafts such as fortune drums, Peking Opera masks, lantern decorations, Chinese drums, horse paper chains, and colourful bookmarks. Many students also enjoyed a playful dumpling-making activity using playdough, bringing an element of fun and imagination to the experience.
Food is an important part of Chinese New Year celebrations, and students were excited to enjoy fried rice as part of the lunch program on the day of the festival.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Chinese Dragon Dance incursion. Students watched the vibrant dragon move through the space to the rhythm of drums, experiencing the energy and excitement of a traditional performance that symbolises good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
To share festive wishes, every student also received a wish from the Chinese Red Envelope containing visual messages of good luck and positive wishes for the new year, adding a special and meaningful touch to the celebration.
Students particularly loved the hands-on activities and the chance to create bright decorations to mark the occasion. Engaging the dragon dance and taking part in festive crafts brought lots of smiles, laughter, and curiosity as students explored the celebration together.
The celebration was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience and appreciate different cultural traditions while sharing joyful moments together as a school community. We look forward to celebrating again next year!
