Assistant Principal's Report

The weeks are starting to really fly by! We have had a really busy term so far with lots of exciting events still to come for our school community. With seven weeks of learning underway, students are showing that they are really settled and thriving in all aspects of their learning and school life.

International Women’s Day (Sunday 8 March)

I would like to acknowledge International Women’s Day, by celebrating the inspiring women and girls in our school and community, and recognising the achievements, leadership and strength they bring to our world. We recognise that gender is diverse and we value and respect all people within our wonderful school community.

“How was your day?”

Research on family communication shows that small daily conversations, even short ones, can help build trust and openness, making it more likely that kids will talk to their parents or carers later when something important happens. Talking with children about their day helps them feel valued, listened to and supported.

Often we ask the question of our children “How was school?” or “How was your day?” and at times we can receive a very limited response, if we get one at all! Here are some questions that you can ask your children to learn more about their day without asking “How was your day?”

Questions to help children reflect on their feelings and focus on the positives of the day:

  • What made you smile today?
  • What was the best thing that happened today?
  • Was there anything that made you feel proud?

Questions to show an interest in their learning and encourage persistence:

  • What was something that made you think a lot?
  • What was the hardest thing you had to do?
  • If you could teach me one thing from school today, what would it be?

Questions to check in with how well they are socialising and connecting with their peers:

  • Who did you spend time with today?
  • Did anyone do something kind today?
  • Did you help someone or did someone help you?

Remember to consider timing when checking in with your children. Kids often open up when they’re not the centre of attention including when playing, just before bed or doing something side by side including longer car drives.

Give these a go and let us know if you find any success with them!

Have a fantastic week!
