Celebration of Learning Day

Gallery Image

We encourage all current families to join us on Wednesday 20th May from 2:40pm to 5:00pm as we celebrate our students' learning and achievements.  We will be opening up the learning spaces and giving our parents an opportunity to walk through the school and participate in a lesson with your child.  This will be followed by a community BBQ and cake stall, with some fun activities like face painting, student musical performances, activities and games on the forecourt.

To make this event a huge success – WE NEED YOU!  Our community support, donations and volunteer help is desperately needed, so please get involved, however you can – big or small!

We need PARENT VOLUNTEERS to help Emma and Kirsty with some preparation prior to the event.  These tasks can be done at a time convenient to you.

  • Cutting and Laminating tasks
  • Letters to request donations from local businesses that need to be distributed
  • Sorting and storing of donations received
  • Cake Stall Packages to be prepared ready to be distributed to families
  • Supporting the office with Pre-Sale transactions before or after school

On Event Day - Wednesday 20th May

  • Collection of Cakes/Slices from 8:45am
  • Sausage Sizzle between 1pm to 5pm: Set up, Cooks, food servers and cashiers.
  • Cake Stall between 1pm to 5pm: Set up, servers and cashiers.
  • Dedicated Pack up / Clean Up Crew from 4:30pm to 5:30pm

If you can help for even just 30 minutes, please register via the link provided or see Kirsty or Emma at the office. You’re welcome to volunteer for more than one time-slot or to help set up or pack up – the more help we have, the less work for each person to do!

If you have any queries, or can help in any way possible, please email south.melbourne.ps@education.vic.gov.au and we’ll be in touch.  We can guide you through how easy it is to get involved and support our school community.

If you can help or donate - please fill out the VOLUNTEER SURVEY here.

If you can donate any of the below items, please drop them off to the office as soon as possible or let us know that you can supply these on the day – please get involved and see how easy it is to support our wonderful school.

  • Pre-cut bags of sliced onions - about 5-6kg
  • Do you own a bakery or know someone that does?  Are you willing to ask our local bakery for their support?  We need about 40 loaves of sliced bread!
  • Cans of soft drinks and bottles of water – anyone have a Costco membership that is willing to help with purchasing these or donate a slab or two from the supermarket?
  • Vegetarian sausages - we need Woolworths Vege Sausages - donate a pack or two?
  • Large Eskies for us to borrow (to store uncooked food in)
  • Foil trays for cooked meat – donate a pack or 2?
  • Serviettes – donate a pack or 2?

Sick Bay Chronicle Entries

The Sickbay Chronicle feature in Compass allows our school to effectively manage student visits to sickbay by recording details of ailments, injuries, and illnesses your child may experience whilst at school.

The most common reasons for a child attending sick bay are:

A bump to the Head, Cut / Abrasion / Scratch, Heavy knock or bruising, Rash or Allergic Reactions, Insect Bites / Stings, Stomach ache, Head or Ear ache, Nose Bleeds, Cold or Flu symptoms, Sore throat, Asthma Symptoms, Vomiting or Diarrhoea.

Most SMPS Staff are trained in First Aid Level 2, CPR, Asthma and Anaphylaxis so whilst we have a basic knowledge of how to treat and monitor most incidents, we are not trained medical professionals so cannot provide a diagnosis or major treatment needs.

Depending on your child’s visit to Sick Bay, you may see treatment options such as:

Wound cleaned and dressed, Washed / Flushed with Saline, Heat Pack applied, Ice Pack / Cold Compress applied, Temperature Check, Basic Concussion Test Performed, Student Allowed to Rest, A Little TLC (Tender Loving Care!).

These are the most common forms of treatment that we provide to your child whilst at school and generally do not require any further interventions or follow up. This includes the student’s presentation, the staff member’s assessment of their condition, any treatment provided, and outcomes.

A Sick Bay Chronicle entry will be made by staff, and you will be notified via automatic e-mail that your child has attended sick bay.

Dear Parent,

Your child attended Sickbay today.

Please login to your Compass account to find out further details regarding your child.

Kind Regards,

South Melbourne Primary School

If you receive the above Sick Bay notification, but a member of our school staff has not contacted you by phone, this is because your child has been assessed and treated and has been deemed well enough to return to class – there is no need for parents to call school.  You are able to check the details of your child’s visit to sick bay through Compass if you would like to know the reason and details of their visit.

Sick Bay Chronicles can be seen on the Student Profile Tab in Compass.  If you have multiple children attending SMPS, you may need to check the Student Profile Tab of each of your children to see which child has visited us.

If your child sustains a significant injury, is extremely distressed, has reported vomiting or diarrhea or has a high temperature, a phone call will be made to you to advise you personally and discuss treatment options with you or to request you pick your child up immediately.  A Compass Sick Bay Chronicle will also be recorded later that day.

It would be appreciated if parents could check Compass Sick Bay details if you receive notifications, prior to calling the office.  This way we are not relaying information that is readily available to you.

Your support in this process is appreciated.

Protecting Against Measles

  • Measles cases are rising in Victoria. Most cases are from returned travellers, but local spread is occurring.
  • About Measles: Measles is a highly contagious viral infection spread by airborne droplets. Symptoms may include fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, red/sore eyes, diarrhoea, followed by a red, blotchy rash. Serious illness can occur, especially for: pregnant women, children under 5, and people with weakened immune systems.
  • If your child develops symptoms: keep them home, seek medical care - call ahead to your health service (wear a mask on arrival), and inform the school so that we may make our community aware and request vigilance. Keep your child at home until well and cleared by a health professional.
  • Vaccination is the safest protection - 2 doses are needed for full protection. Please check your child’s vaccinations if born overseas, have recently returned from overseas travel or are planning overseas travel in the near future.
  • Check your immunisation/vaccination records via MyGov Medicare online account or Australian Immunisation Register (1800 653 809), or by speaking to your GP.
  • Free vaccines are available for Infants 12-18 months, Children and teens under 20 years, Adult refugees and humanitarian entrants, anyone born during or after 1966 without 2 doses or if they are unsure, Infants 6-11 months before overseas travel
  • Vaccinations are available from your GP, local pharmacist, local council, or Aboriginal Health Service. Call ahead to confirm eligibility for a free vaccine.
  • Please provide an updated immunisation history statement to the office if your child has received new or catch-up vaccines.
  • If you would like more information:  Department of Health – measles information and translated resources or See your GP, local pharmacist, local council, or Aboriginal Health Service Better Health Channel – How to find your immunisation records
