Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News

HOME INQUIRY:

Inquiry: Please continue to have conversations with your child about the different strategies they can use when they are struggling with different events in their lives. What significant changes do they think they will be experiencing this year?

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: Working on general multiplication skills with the goal for automaticity of the facts up to x12

Harmony Day:

Family Cultural Background, Languages and Harmony Day Survey  – Fill in form

As part of our commitment to celebrating the rich cultural diversity within our school community, we invite you to complete this short survey about your family’s cultural background and your child’s sense of belonging at school. Your insights will help us ensure that every student feels seen, valued and included.

We are also seeking parent support for our upcoming Harmony Day celebrations and would love to know if you are able to contribute in any way. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to nurture a welcoming and inclusive community for all.

Camp: Camp will be held on Monday 30th March - Wednesday 1st April (Week 10) at Woodhouse Adventure Park.

Please use the following link to register your child for camp as soon as possible. This will include medical and dietary requirements.

Toddle: If you still do not have access to Toddle, please contact the front office.

iPads: Please ensure your child has working headphones and a keyboard. The iPad keyboard will be important in the development of keyboard typing skills which will be part of their class learning. The headphones will be regularly used in class for a variety of purposes.  Please check the connection of the headphones with the iPad as newer versions of iPads have a different connection point.

Uniform:

Please ensure your child is in correct school uniform, which includes correct formal shoes on Monday and Wednesday and no additional jewellery. Please refer to the Uniform Guidelines located on the school’s website. There have been students wearing incorrect uniform, including socks and shoes and it would be appreciated if these could be rectified.  (https://www.goldengrove.sa.edu.au/school-life/uniform/

Year 6 Jackets:

Thank you for your patience as we work with a new supplier on our updated Year 6 jackets. We have now received a sample, and they are looking very sophisticated.

We understand that the wait is not ideal, but we have been talking with the students about the exciting fact that they will be the first Year 6 cohort to wear this new design.

We are getting closer to being able to provide you with a sizing chart and ordering information. Thank you again for your understanding and support.

Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:

In Writer’s Workshop, students will continue to explore persuasive writing by clearly stating an opinion and supporting it with strong arguments and evidence. They will focus on effective structure, including engaging introductions, organised body paragraphs, and strong conclusions.

In Reader’s Workshop, students will continue to analyse persuasive texts to identify techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, modality, and the use of facts and examples, considering how these influence an audience.

Mathematics:

Students have been working hard to retrieve and strengthen their understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). These skills will continue to be developed throughout the year as we apply them to other concepts such as area, perimeter, volume and mass.

We have now begun exploring measurement, with an initial focus on selecting appropriate units to measure length. Students will then apply these skills to real-life, multi-step problems, including calculating the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes and more complex measurement challenges.

Inquiry: Our inquiry into ‘Who We Are’  - ‘Changes people experience at different stages of their lives affect who they are’, is coming to an end. Students are completing a final summative task where they will demonstrate strategies for managing change and regulating their emotions. They will reflect on how to show respect, empathy and inclusion in their interactions, and how to strengthen strategies that support their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing.

Blessings for the week ahead,
