Exploring Stories Through Media and Film: 6D's Creative Journey.

In the second half of Term 3, Year 6 students have embarked on an exciting journey of exploring storytelling through the lens of media and film. This unit has allowed students to dive deep into the world of visual storytelling, enhancing their narrative writing skills by understanding the power of framing and the use of colour to evoke emotions and set the tone.

In 6D, the learners have embraced this creative challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. They began their journey by developing storyboards, where they carefully planned out the sequence of events in their narratives. This process not only allowed them to structure their stories but also helped them think critically about how each scene would be visually represented.

Building on this foundation, learners then shifted their focus to framing - a key element in both filmmaking and narrative writing. They explored how the composition of a scene can influence the audience's perception and understanding of the story. By experimenting with different angles, perspectives, and shot sizes, learners discovered how framing can highlight key moments, convey emotions, and add depth to their narratives.

Colour theory also played a significant role in this unit. Students learned how different colours can set the mood of a scene, symbolise themes, and influence the audience's emotions. Whether using warm tones to create a sense of comfort and nostalgia or cool tones to evoke mystery and tension, 6D’s students have demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of how colour can enhance their storytelling.

As part of their success criteria, learners are required to effectively incorporate these elements into their final projects at the end of this term. They are tasked with creating a detailed storyboard that not only outlines the plot but also showcase their understanding of framing and colour. For example, Austin describes, “My character is in jail and is thinking how he can escape. To depict this, I zoomed in on his face overshadowing the jail cells to show that he is determined to escape.” Reina shares, “In my frame, I depicted three scenes showing how my character is betrayed by his friend. I used grey pencil shading to show the mysteriousness and scheming nature of the evil friend.”

This experience has not only enriched the students' narrative writing skills but also provided them with a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between media and storytelling. As we move forward, the skills 6D’s learners have developed will continue to enhance their creative expression, both in writing and beyond.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and creativity shown in this unit, and we look forward to seeing how 6D’s learners continue to grow as storytellers.
