CURRICULUM FOCUS

Writing:

This week in Writing, we are learning to engage in the writing process.

VOCABULARY

Writing Process - steps that you can take to make writing easier for you.

E.g.: Prewriting/Planning, Draft, Revise, Edit, Publish.

Prewriting/Planning - brainstorming, planning and orally verbalising your ideas/sentence.

Draft - writing your sentence.

Revise - re reading your writing to see if you need to add, change or remove.

Edit - re reading your writing and making changes to fix any mistakes you have made.

E.g.: spelling, punctuation, sentence structure.

Publish - writing up a good copy on either paper or using technology, adding in any edits you have made previously.

Problem - something that goes wrong usually to a character in a text.

Solution - the problem gets fixed/solved.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Planning and Draft Phase - Using the above picture prompt, engage in a discussion with your child about what they can see in the picture. E.g.: Does it remind them of anything? Are there characters in the picture? What is the setting? What might the characters be doing? What can you see in the picture?

Ask your child to verbalise a sentence relating to the picture prompt. Consider encouraging them to think about more than one sentence, potentially including a problem and a solution in their writing.

Ask your child to write their sentences and re read them out loud to you.

E.g.: A boy is walking through a magical forest. He sees a big, green door. The boy walks through the door and gets transported to a far-off place. The boy has to find his way home.

*Get your child to keep their writing in a safe place as we will be using it again next week.
