CURRICULUM FOCUS

Reading:

This week in Reading, we are learning to synthesise.

VOCABULARY

Synthesise - pulling together prior knowledge, and newly learned ideas to understand the text. When students synthesise, they are made aware of how their thinking changes as they read a text.

Prior Knowledge - what you already know before learning new information.

Non-Fiction - real information based on facts.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to choose a non-fiction dot book from their blue satchel (if they don’t have a non-fiction dot book, you could use their library book, books from home, newspapers, or look up facts about a topic on the internet on your phone.

E.g.: you may know your child really likes learning information about trucks, so you have looked up interesting facts about trucks on your phone. Ask your child to identify the topic of the text and to discuss/draw something that they already know about the text topic.

  • My prior knowledge is that trucks can come in all shapes and sizes.

Next, read the text with your child and ask them to discuss/draw something that they learnt. Then ask your child to reflect on whether their thinking has changed, deepened or stayed the same.

  • I have learnt that trucks can have different jobs to do depending on their shape. Some trucks are dump trucks and have big containers on the back of them.

My thinking has changed/ deepened/ stayed the same?
