Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

What a fun filled couple of weeks the preps have had, how are we almost at the end of the term? This week we had a visit from Victoria Police where the students got to learn the roles of the Police, what they do in the community and the various roles that they have in keeping us safe. The preps also got to learn the different equipment that the police use to do their job. They showed us the 3 different sirens that they use and that they all mean different things. The police reiterated that when we need help or assistance to call 000 for support.

We had another parent from our community come in and share her role she does as a nurse. She spoke about what she does as a nurse, the equipment she uses and went into the history of the hospital. The students enjoyed learning about the role of a nurse and the amazing things that they do keeping us healthy and well. Thank you Shanelle for taking time from your busy day to talk to the preps, we really appreciate it.

Community Helpers Day

Monday 9th September 2024

We will be celebrating our learning in inquiry with a community helpers day. The students will be participating in a range of activities being shopkeeper, Doctor/nurse, Gardener, Police, Fire, Chef, Builder and Postman. We encourage all the preps to come dressed up as their favourite community helper. We look forward to this exciting day of learning and celebration and appreciate your continued support.

In Literacy, the preps have been learning about the elements of a text and what makes up a story when we read it. The students have also looked at the various ways that we can retell a story in writing and have looked into creating a diorama, stop motion and a book to retell a common story that have been explored in class.

During Maths, the students have been learning about addition and place value. The preps have learned about how to add simple quantities, the value of a number and facts that make up a number.

Throughout Religion, the preps have been learning about how Mary is the mother of Jesus’ and explored our school song and the various images of Mary and what they mean and tell us.

Learning Centre Two

LITERACY

During Book Week, the teachers read a variety of picture story books to the senior students, all books that were on the shortlist for the 2024 Book Week awards. One of those books was 'That Bird Has Arms' by Jol and Kate Temple; a story about difference and identity. It’s about learning to see that what sets you apart is what makes you strong, and it’s about pride in your own uniqueness.

The students created posters using their own birds with arms in different poses. They used these characters to share messages against bullying during Anti-bullying Week.

We also read 'Every Night at Midnight' by Peter Cheong;  a book about finding friendship in unexpected places. The students were asked to think about places where they feel safe and illustrate these for a centre display.

MATHS

In Maths, the 5/6s have been investigating 3-dimensional shapes and their features by building shapes from their nets. This week, they have been learning about the coordinate system used on maps and have used these to create directions and find specific locations.

WELLBEING

Earlier this term, to recognise the National Week of Action Against Bullying, the 5/6 team began a Wellbeing focus on saying 'No Way to Bullying!'. The students were tasked with designing an anti-bullying poster for display in our school.

INQUIRY

All students are currently working on presenting their historical knowledge for their Inquiry projects. Natasha has chosen to write a biography about Mary MacKillop - Australia's First Saint. Well done to her for a well-written piece about an important person in Australia's history.

SWIMMING

Today was our final day at the King Swim pool after 2 weeks of swimming lessons every day. The LC2 staff are all so very proud of the 5/6 students who attended the pool. They tried their very best and were able to make huge gains in their confidence around water and with the different swimming techniques they were taught. Our senior students showed great resilience walking to and from the pool on some extremely windy days and they were all very encouraging of each other in the water. Well done!!

Please remember to approve your child's swimming through the parent portal and return the Kingswim form to your learning group teacher.

We also visited the Great Book Swap!

We have continued reading the Mr. Chicken books. This time, Mr. Chicken visits Paris and London. While reading the books, we focused on specific vocabulary, landmarks, and characteristics. On Wednesday, we explored Indigenous books as we discussed why we were having the Great Book Swap.

With writing, students have been making text-to-self, text-to-world and text-to-text connections. Students have been using colourful semantics to help them write sentences.

During Maths, we finished multiplication by making arrays and moved to division. Students have been sharing objects into equal groups.

In Religion, we have been learning about Mary, the qualities she has and how she is connected to our school. We explored the school song and how it is connected to Mary.

For Inquiry, we made connections to the locations we visited on our Werribee excursion and the importance of those places and the people who work there. We have begun to plan our own mini Werribee which we will construct in our learning groups.

We have been embracing diversity during Wellbeing hour. We put ourselves in other people's shoes and discussed empathy. We then made ourselves and our family and the qualities we all bring to our learning groups.

This week was Learning Support Officer (LSO) appreciation week. We are very thankful for all the wonderful work that our LSOs provide to the teachers and students every day and to thank them the students created notes telling them why they appreciate them!

Learning Centre Four

Camp:

Last week 3/4 Blue, 3/4 Orange and 3/4 White all attended Urban Camp and were lucky enough to explore some of the wonderful landmarks in Melbourne. Our first stop was the Shrine of Remembrance. We learnt about the history of the shrine, saw first hand one of the Gallipoli landing boats, viewed some of the artworks created based on World War 1 and tried on some of the items soldiers wore during World War 1. The students also went up to the crypt and learnt about how the position of the sun falls directly over Love on 11th of November at 11 o’clock. From there, 3/4 Blue walked to the MCG and 3/4 Orange and 3/4 White hopped on a bus, making their way to the Old Melbourne Gaol.

At the Old Melbourne Gaol, the students were able to eat their snack in the courtyard before we began our tour of the Gaol. They learnt about the rich history and what life was like for the prisoners. The students were told the story of Ned Kelly and how he links to the Gaol. They then had a short time to explore the Gaol and look inside some of the cells.

We were then walking towards the train station ready to make our way to the Urban Campgrounds. 3/4 Blue caught the train from Jolimont and 3/4 Orange and 3/4 White caught the train from Melbourne Central. When we arrived at the camp, the students had a little bit of down time where they could: go to their cabins and get organised, play some ball games outside, enjoy the indoor games which included a foosball table and an arcade machine. All three groups had dinner and caught the bus to the Eureka Skydeck. We all had the opportunity to take in the views of Melbourne from the balcony and spotted many landmarks we had explored in class. It was then time to head back to camp and go to sleep.

Early the next morning, students and staff enjoyed a lovely breakfast before heading to the train station to make their way to the last landmark on our trip. 3/4 Blue hopped off at Melbourne Central ready to make their way to the Old Melbourne Gaol and 3/4 Orange and 3/4 White hopped off at Parliament ready to walk to the MCG. At the Melbourne Cricket Grounds, the groups went on a tour exploring some of the rooms such as: the ice baths, medical rooms, media room and the meeting room. As part of the tour, the students learnt about the history of the MCG. Afterwards, we got to explore the National Sports Museum and Game On. The students loved the interactive nature where they could play and explore the different sporting areas.

Book Week Activities

While the 3 groups were on camp, 3/4 Green, 3/4 Red and 3/4 Yellow completed some of the book week activities during literacy. Over weeks 5-7 we explored some great books that allowed for different activities which included: creative tasks, creating and writing stories with the inspiration from the texts and so much more.

Maths - Fractions

This week we began our unit on fractions. To begin, we learnt about some of the vocabulary that is associated with fractions and students were able to explore how to make different fractions using play dough. We then started looking at fractions of a collection and how we can make different fractions using concrete materials.

Swimming
