Term 3, Week 9 - Monday 9th September, 2024
Dear Families of OLSC
It is hard to believe that we have come to the last couple of weeks of Term 3. This term has been huge and doesn't show many signs of the pace letting up.
Last week was LSO appreciation week. I extend a heart felt and sincere thanks to all of our LSO team for their work with our students. I can safely say that every student in our school has benefitted from the support of this group of highly dedicated educators and we are very grateful.
From all of us at OLSC, thank you Dasanthi, Anna, Amelia, Sarena, Teagan, Sue, Cheryl, Mary, Gabby, Milla, Kelsey, Danielle, Helen and Alison.
On behalf the staff in attendance and The Parents and Friends Group I thank everyone that came along to our trivia night. This was our first planned event for adults since prior to the pandemic and it was a great success. Congratulations to the winning team (John Triviaolta) that Lauren (Lizzie's mum) entered.
Jen and Roger Climie put a table together and commiserations to them as the wooden spooners of the night - thanks for being a great sport about it and supporting OLSC!
The trivia night was the first adult event that we have undertaken since have planned an opportunity for the adults in the community to gather. On Friday September 6th we will host a Trivia Night. This is the first adults event that has been planned since the end of the pandemic.
THE GREAT BOOK SWAP
On Wednesday morning, the hall was filled with excitement as The Great Book Swap began. Our school captains and SRC students busily set up the tables of books on Tuesday morning and then they helped the students to find books that they might be interested in buying.
We are very grateful to all families who contributed to The Great Book Swap. We are
pleased and proud to be donating $430, on behalf of the OLSC community, to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to help promote literacy in remote indigenous communities. That means, 430 books went home with children to share with their families. All students who brought money to school left the Book Swap with a big smile on their faces.
BOOK FAIR THANKS
The Book Fair finished two weeks ago today and it is safe to say it was a massive success once again. This year, we sold $7000 worth of books over the four days meaning we have earned many points to use to purchase new books through Scholastic for our classrooms. Thank you to everyone who came through the Book Fair to support our students' passion for reading - it was wonderful to see so many of them excited to visit the Fair.
Congratulations to Olivia, Zaina, Kaadi and Lauren for winning the Book Week colouring competition for their year level - well done!
PREMIERS' READING CHALLENGE
Today is the final day of the Premiers' Reading Challenge challenge. Congratulations to those who have already completed the challenge (over 70 students). In total, just over 6,300 books have been logged as being read on the VPRC dashboard since the challenge began at OLSC - that is a very impressive number of books!!
We have just completed our first two weeks of our inaugural swimming program. The 5/6 students progressed well and their progress and confidence in the pool developed over the two week intensive.
Here are some reflections from the students below:
"The swimming program was a new experience. I feel it helped those that don't know how to swim get comfortable in the water." (Anika K, Year 6)
"I enjoyed the swimming program a lot. I think it is a great opportunity for the people who don't know how to swim can learn and be safe in the ocean." (Rohan V, Year 5)
If your child is riding their bike or scooter to school please send a lock. Just 2 weeks ago we had an unfortunate incident that involved someone jumping our fence and stealing one of the senior students bike. This was particularly difficult for one of our students to deal with. To avoid this in the future we ask that all bike and scooter riders use a bike lock.
We have worked with Werribee police regarding this and they have been provided with the camera footage, however it seems unlikely that it will be recovered.
At the bottom of the page there are a couple of fliers containing information on sporting opportunities in our local community. Have a great week everyone!
Justin and all of the staff at OLSC
