WPS Community Children’s Garden

Over the last two weeks some senior students have been helping me run garden club. We’ve been removing weeds and old soil from the Touch sensory garden bed, with the aim to empty the bed and refill it with good soil in which to grow a summer crop. This activity has provided some wonderful lessons in:
Types of plant roots – running grass with long rhizome roots versus deep, carrot-like tap roots.
Soil science – black, compost rich, good soil on top with grey, clay, not-so-plant-friendly soil underneath.
The fun parts of the activity include a competition to see who can dig up the longest and deepest roots, making a new path through the water to access our shipping container shed, and the sheer achievement and comaraderie of getting big plants out of the ground.
