Learning and Teaching

Flourishing Learners Conference

Last week Monica and I attended the Flourishing Learners Conference, hosted by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools. The conference brought together educators from across Victoria to share research and practice about how students learn best and how schools can help every child flourish.

Some of the big messages we took away were:

  • Participation matters – learning happens when every student is thinking, making meaning, and practising.

  • High expectations for all – every child can succeed when we give them clear, structured teaching and the right support.

  • Wellbeing and learning go hand in hand – students thrive when they feel safe, connected, and valued.

  • Teaching with evidence – the most powerful difference we can make is through strong, research-based teaching practices.

  • The role of teachers is vital – effective techniques, careful curriculum design, and responsive teaching help unlock student potential.

Two keynote speakers gave especially powerful reminders:

  • Professor Dylan Wiliam emphasised that the single most important factor in improving student outcomes is the quality of teaching. He challenged schools to keep building strong, evidence-based practice.

  • Kristen Douglas from Headspace highlighted how wellbeing and learning are inseparable, and that students need safe, connected environments to truly flourish.

At St Joseph's, we are excited to continue this journey of strengthening learning and teaching. We thank our families for being part of this partnership, supporting children to flourish both at school and at home.

Wishing all our families a happy holiday and safe travels to those who are heading away for the break.

Kind regards
