The Importance of Journaling

Article by Mike Lampard, Leader of Technologies Middle School

In each unit of Design & Technology students are required to record their progress and reflect on their learning. This is an important part of the design process as it helps students to consolidate their thinking and demonstrate their understanding of the processes that have been attempted. Students also learn to make judgements about the accuracy and effectiveness of their undertakings and how they might make improvements. At VCE level the production records are a major part of the assessment for the production component. Alongside the recording of progress is the evaluation of not only the product – whether it is fit for purpose, meets the needs of the target audience and the initial design brief – but the process.

Recording what we do, clarifying why we do it, demonstrating our understanding and evaluating during the different design & production stages is to be encouraged and embraced as students develop their critical thinking skills.

The accompanying images show some of the steps involved in the construction and finishing of a Year 7 Box and Year 8 Pot Holder with part of the journal entry for the steps.
