VCE Chemistry
In Unit 3 Chemistry, students examine electroplating, which is the deposition by electrolysis of a layer of one metal on the surface of another. In this practical, students used the electrochemical series to predict the metals plated onto the cathode of an electrolytic cell (zinc, tin, or copper), including writing of balanced equations for the reactions occurring at the anode and cathode. They also applied Faraday’s Laws and stoichiometry to determine the relationship between the mass of metal gained at the cathode and the quantity of electricity passed through the cell.
