Grade Four

Students have settled back into Term 2 well. They have been engaging in wellbeing activities about personal strengths. They have learnt about the positive impacts personal strengths can have on their social relationships.

During English lessons, the students have begun working on narrative writing. They implemented thinking that they had brainstormed in their writers’ notebooks and planned a narrative around this chosen idea. Students then began the planning phase, plotting out their story. They proceeded to draft and write their story, finishing off with editing and publishing. A focus for student mini writing lessons has been looking at balancing our story with action and dialogue. We have also explicitly looked at paragraphing and how to identify when to begin a new one. We are looking forward to reading their completed pieces!

Math lessons over the past few weeks have given the students the opportunity to explore 2D shapes and their properties. They have investigated features of shapes and identified properties such as symmetry and angles. Students created different designs using their knowledge of shapes. Students made use of Active April data to create data displays and interpret the findings. During Mental Computation, students are focussing on strategies to support their times tables knowledge and recall.

Our Integrated Studies concept this term is Change - Into the Unknown. Students have been learning about how maps and timelines help us to understand how the world has changed. They have watched and listened to information about James Cook and the impact his journeys have had on our understanding of the world. Students enjoyed a virtual tour of a replica of the HMB Endeavour. They were able to explore different parts of the ship using their Chromebooks. We are very much looking forward to exploring a real life tall ship when we go on our excursion to the Polly Woodside in June.
