News from Performing Arts and Music

Performing Arts

Welcome back everyone for another great year in Performing Arts. It has been a busy start to the year with students across all P-3 grades engaged in a variety of exciting activities in Drama, Dance and Music.

Prep

In Prep students have been delighting us with their creativity and imagination in their Performing Arts classes. They have been exploring emotions and honing their skills in using their face, voice, and body to express different emotions. They have also been having fun with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, acting out the different characters and working towards a small scene performance in class. Through this, they are developing their skills in characterisation and storytelling.

Grade 2

In Grade 2, students have been immersing themselves in the fascinating tales of Coco Chanel and David Attenborough from the stories "Little People, Big Dreams." They have learned how to embody the personalities of their characters and changed their voice and the way they moved to fully act like their characters. Students are currently performing their rehearsed script to their peers and will be viewing and evaluating their own drama skills and performance.

Grade 1 and 3

Throughout this first semester in Music, the students have been using a range of instruments to play short songs and create short beats, rhythms, and compositions. These instruments have included Keyboards and Glockenspiels but also tubed percussion instruments called Boomwhackers. It has been great to see and hear them develop their skills in playing the short songs regarding selecting the correct notes or keeping in time especially when playing some of the songs together as a group or whole class.

Whilst the aim of these classes is for students to get hands on experience, they are also introduced to simple music notation to learn how music is written and how it relates to the instruments they use.

Band

Our PPS Grade 6 band is back for 2024 and after a lengthy audition process the band has been selected. Thank you to all those who auditioned. It was fantastic to have such a great interest in joining the band. The band are now starting to learn their first song for upcoming performances. Our first main performance is the annual School of Rock Day which will be held on the final week of Term 2.

Overall, it has been an exciting and productive start to the year in Performing Arts, with our students demonstrating creativity, talent, and excitement for the arts.
