Grade 5 Report

Camp

Wow! What a week it was for the Grade 5 students and teachers who attended the Grade 5 Camp. We started off our adventure with a trip to Sovereign Hill. The students were able to take part in various demonstrations including gold pouring, print making and candle dipping. Everyone was extremely excited to hit the shops on the main strip and treat themselves to special keepsakes, ornaments and, of course, the famous boiled raspberry drops! Many of the students enjoyed seeing all the interesting machinery used throughout the gold rush, exploring the Red Hill mine and learning a lot about what life was like for the people of Ballarat during this time.

After our day out at Sovereign Hill, we made our way to the Log Cabin Camp in Creswick. As we pulled up to the campgrounds, the excited squeals of the children could no doubt be heard from Melbourne. After we got settled into our cabins and got acquainted with the campsite, it was time to let our hair down for our big Grade 5 disco! Everyone brought their best dance moves along and enjoyed singing to all the pop classics.

Next up, it was time for all the exciting activities. The students took part in five rotations including the giant swing, orienteering, the zip line, team building initiatives and milk crate stacking. Needless to say, so many of the students jumped at every opportunity to be hoisted into the air for some heart-stopping fun. It was wonderful to see the students learning how to work together to complete tasks and overcome any challenges.

On our second night, we went back to Sovereign Hill to watch the Aura show. It started off with an incredible 3D movie that detailed the properties of gold. The students sat in awe of the amazing visual images that leapt from the screens. We then moved on to see a light show with artistic moving image projections that told the indigenous story of Bunjil the Eagle. The show did not stop there! After this, we sat in on a story about the history of Ballarat during the period of the gold rush. Not only was this show full of fantastic information, but it was also put together in a creative way that left the students on the edge of their seats.

On our last day, the students were all able to reflect while eating damper around a campfire. It was the perfect way to finish off our amazing adventure.

Everyone had such a fantastic time at camp and the Grade 5 teachers couldn’t be prouder of the students’ efforts. It was pleasing to hear the camp staff commending the students for their outstanding behaviour.

We can’t wait for our next adventure in Grade 5!
